All of us are inevitably faced with stress and stressful situations at some point of our lives or the other. So how do we go about dealing with them? It is true that one cannot run off from life's everyday problems. But there are definitely ways and means by which we can change our own attitudes and tackle issues in ways that do not cause us any strain.

Regular, moderate exercise boosts the immune system, improves blood circulation and generally bestows a feeling of energy and well-being. More advanced exercises such as dance or aerobics can literally get your whole system into gear, making you feel right at the top of the world, keeping you smiling all day long!

Music therapy

Music works wonders to relieve one of stress. In fact, it has been medically proven that certain types of melodies can actually heal the mind, quiet it down and give the listener immense peace and calm. There are many musicians all over the world trying to do more research on this subject. The Internet is filled with many types of music, especially meant to relax the mind and free it of its immense stress.

Aromatherapy

Many people also believe that aromatherapy helps them reduce stress levels. Certain types of soothing smells trigger certain chemical reactions in the brain, which in turn, acts to ease the mind of its worries and cares. This method is not at all expensive and has the potential of helping you out immensely. Do give it a try.

The above are only some tips to reduce stress. There are many, many other ways you can think of to cut down the tensions in your life. Have you ever wondered how piano tuners learn their trade? Most tuners learn the business from a family member. In fact, piano tuning often spans several generations in a family, handed down from father to son.

There are good tuners and great tuners, but in any case they have to learn a craft that is several hundred years old and has changed little.

There are three distinct types of tuners: tuners, repairmen and rebuilders. Usually a tuner works their way up from simple tuning to the more difficult task of repair and then rebuilding.

A tuner can expect $100 per tuning, but if they work for someone else they may take home only half of that. Still, it is a job much in demand.

The average tuning takes at least an hour, and requires quiet and solitude, although the very best tuners, usually working for a large firm like Steinway, can expect to be on call for the most famous concert pianists.

These superstars of the piano business hover backstage at major concerts, waiting for the occasional string to break so they can vault out onto the stage and fix it in front of thousands of people.

One such tuner superstar is Franz Mohr, who was tuner and repairman for two legendary pianists, Vladimir Horowitz and Artur Rubinstein. As an employee of the Steinway Company, he was delegated to accompany either of these two great artists on their world travels, tuning hammer and pliers at the ready, in case something should go wrong, \he most dramatic being a string breaking during a concert.

Mohr became a personal friend of both Rubinstein and Horowitz, was part of their international entourage.

Mohr selected pianos for Horowitz, for Horowitz never took a "company" piano. By this you must understand that great concert pianists are sometimes forced to play on a variety of instruments in their travels. The only solution to this problem of inconsistency is to take a piano with you, and this is very, very expensive, requiring genuine superstar status.

Horowitz had his favorite Steinway 9 foot concert grand, and he kept it at home. When a concert tour came, the neighbors of his New York City Upper East Side townhouse were used to the sight of the immense piano being lowered slowly out the window and onto a waiting truck.

Mohr and other great tuners I have known like Steinway's Heinz Zimmerman were artists in their own right. To tune and repair a piano for a professional pianist is an extremely demanding job, for the results must in fact be perfect. Every key must feel exactly the same. Every key must feel, to the artist, as if they have the same weight, the same feel, the same speed. The process that achieves this at the piano is called "regulation," and may take several days to adjust the thousands of tiny moving parts

Customer Review: A good album with excellent bonuses
At this price you have to really like Coldplay. This is not their best album but great nonetheless. I will always enjoy Parachutes the most. This edition of X&Y includes the videos for "Fix You," "Speed of Sound," "The Hardest Part," and "Talk". It also includes two exclusive B-sides: "Setting Sun" and "Gravity". "Setting Sun" is actually a very good song. It's a shame it doesn't get more recognition. Did I mention the songs come in DVD-audio? Overall, this is a must-have for any hardcore Coldplay fan. All others can pass.

An interesting thing about subliminal messages in music is that they can easily be disguised with other natural or unnatural form of sounds such as blowing wind, traffic noise, rain falling or even water crashing. In their album Infotainment released in 1996 they included two tracks and went as far as to include a warning message at the start of its first track that a subliminal message is about to be played.

On the other hand, the band Judas Priest was taken to court for using subliminal messages in their songs which believed to have urged the listeners to commit suicide. The case was discharged and they were never proven to have used these techniques.

Josie and the pussycats, a movie released in year 2001, It focuses on the concept of subliminal messages in music and effects on teen minds when constantly listened to subliminal music but also assures viewer that the spell can be broken and one can return to a normal life.

Subliminal messages in videos have been proven to affect sales of condiments at the movie theatres, and in 2006 Derren Brown, and English illusionist, did an experiment which showed how subliminal messages could cause such dramatic effects as to cause 65% of people who had watched a movie to have completely forgotten the plot.

Subliminal messages in music do not necessarily need to be all bad. A single snowflake glistens and swirls past a row of crystaline icicles then lands gently on a blanket of lovely white powder. The air is warm and dry in my cozy music room as I sip rich hot chocolate and sigh at the calm beauty outside my window.

Ahhh, Canada in Winter.

TWANG! Fizzzle. SPROING!! Snap. Thud.

My violin, resting on my desk, is exploding! A peg slips, the D-string unwinds. The other three pegs follow suit thus all four strings sag pathetically. The sudden lack of tension simultaneously causes the bridge to fall off to the floor and the sound post to collapse inside the instrument. In only an instant my violin went from an expensive piece of art to an expensive train wreck.

(Expletives courteously deleted for your reading enjoyment).

Suffice to say, Winter's not so pretty anymore for this violinist.

When the temperature drops to below freezing, as it inevitably does in Canada each winter, there is zero moisture content, or humidity, in the air. This extreme lack of humidity, which is responsible for chapped lips and unmanagable, frizzy hair, also causes wood to dry out. This is all fine and dandy if you're curing firewood for a romantic blaze by the fireplace, but it's murder on violins.

As violins are made almost entirely of wood they are very susceptible to dry air. This is because wood is full of tiny pod-shaped pockets which serve the purpose of storing water for the living tree. As the cut wood ages, it naturally dries and shrinks. Older violins which have had time to dry out or new violins made with old, cured wood do sound better because these pockets are not dense with water but now dried out and the dry spaces create a more resonant tone.

The problem arises when there are sudden changes in humidity. As the air dries rapidly, the tiny moisture pockets are emptied of water, causing the wood to shrink a tiny bit. But when it becomes suddenly dry the wood shrinks so rapidly as to cause potential damage to the instrument.

Exploding Fiddles

The classic violinist's winter dilemma of the instrument seemingly "exploding" apart. This is caused when the wooden pegs which hold the strings shrink and become loose inside their wooden hole, which has also shrunk away from the peg. The enormous amount of tension the strings pulling at the loose peg in a bigger hole causes the peg to spin, instantly unwinding the string until it has no tension.

As one string loosens, the pressure has become higher on the remaining three strings. These then loosen and unwind under the sudden increase in pressure. Soon enough all strings have become floppy and the bridge and soundpost, without any pressure to hold them in place, will fall. Sometimes the pegs will even fall out of the peg box or shoot across the room from the quick unwinding.

This is the violinist's cue to swear loudly.

Even more horrifying yet is when the violin's top plate, or belly, shrinks too far inward yet the saddle, or piece of wood inlayed inside it and against the grain, does not give. The shrinking wood will strain under the pressure and a grain crack can occur. This "saddle crack" can spread as far as your soundpost, which can affect your instrument's tone. They can be repaired, naturally, but it's not cheap and may affect the value of the instrument. Of course a violinist's first course of action is to shout a few crude words.

It's never a pretty site to open your violin case to find it stringless with a post rattling loose inside the instrument, but thankfully you can avoid it. Start by keeping your violin warm. Take your violin into the supermarket rather than leave it in the trunk of your vehicle, even if only for an hour. Wrapping your instrument in a scarf or covering it with a case blanket adds an extra layer of insulation and also helps keep it protected. Even better is to purchase a case cover or a good quality case with extra padding or insulation.

Dry Wood

Then comes the issue of dryness. Players with older violins, violins with cracks or instruments with more likeliness to crack are encouraged to use a violin humidifier. The best kind is the type which inserts into the violin's f-hole. Referred to as a "Dampit," the device is simply a long sponge inside a rubber tube. The moisture is slowly released into the body of the violin and keeps the air moist but not wet.

A drawback to the dampit is that the player must remember to re-wet it every couple of days or so to be effective. Most Guarneri-style violins' f-holes are too narrow to accommodate the tubes, so this solution is limited to Strad copies and other instruments with a larger opening. It also does not keep the pegs from slipping while you play, but is effective in protecting the entire instrument while in storage.

Humidifiers which stay in a case are a good idea for players who are keeping the instrument in storage. The drawback to these is the moment you open the case you have released the moisture. As it is, the best place to keep a violin during winter is in the case unless your home is temperature and humidity controlled.

The poor-man's case humidifier is an apple or potato slice wrapped loosely in a sandwich bag and kept in the case. (Just change it every so often so it doesn't rot and stink up your fiddle...)

Resist the temptation to run out and purchase a huge room humidifier for your fiddle. I've seen violin collectors over-do it and the violins have become swollen and nearly moldy with extra moisture. A couple house plants (spider plants are great) create enough moisture in a room to it ideal for a violin and are just a good idea for air quality in general.

As for heat sources, try not to leave your violin in a room with a wood stove or fireplace. Heat sources will speed up the drying and are bad for varnish as well. Most players leave their violin in the bedroom where temperature is more likely to remain constant 24-hours a day.

If your pegs continue to slip there are a few final things to consider. Perhaps they need to be wedged further into the pegbox during cold months and pulled out a tad during the rainy season when the wood expands. Some pegs need a little extra help with "peg dope." (Really, I'm not making this stuff up). "Peg dope" is a compound which holds a grip and stops slippage in pegs. Ground up rosin powder around the pegs does the trick for some old-time fiddlers, but is sticky and not great in the long term.

When all else fails your violin may need the help of a luthier. If your pegs are misshapen they will not stay fixed in the pegbox and will need to be properly fitted. Older violins' pegbox holes can be ground until they are too large to fit the pegs snugly and would have to be re-bushed, or carefully filled in and re-drilled. Re-bushing is expensive, so pray a bit of peg dope will do the trick.

With some planning you can avoid the worst-case scenario of a cracked violin or one which has come apart due to pegs slipping. Unfortunately everyone seems to have to tune their violins more often in winter. It's just a part of life. Just take your time when you tune your instrument using the pegs as over tightening the pegs is the number one cause of string breaks.

Broken Strings

I can always tell when there's a big change in temperature by how many E-strings I sell in a week! The more strings go out of tune, the more likelihood they will be broken by inexperienced players. Invest in an electronic chromatic tuner and pay attention to the pitch by strumming the string as you tighten it. As long as you don't go above pitch your strings will last all year long.

And remember, even the worst damage to a violin can be fixed. Even the aforementioned predicament is easily overcome by a trip to the violin doctor to reset the soundpost and isn't the end of the world (just a pain in the butt). A Rush of Blood to the Head

One of the most famous experiments in physics is a simple yet profound example of the dual nature of light. It is called the "two-slit experiment." It was first conducted by English polymath, Thomas Yong around 1800 and validated the wave theory of light, overturning Newton's corpuscular ideas. Neils Bohr used it to develop the Principle of Complementarity showing that light was both a particle and a wave and no description of light was complete without referencing both. It was also at the heart of Einstein's famous thought experiment called the EPR Paradox, designed to show the incompleteness of quantum theory. One of the most intriguing aspects of the experiment is that you find exactly what you expect to find. It validates light as both a particle and a wave. How can this be? Well, that is the very question physicists have been trying to answer for over 200 years.

The experiment is very simple. A steady laser beam of light is aimed at a target. Two devices with slits which can be individually opened or closed are placed side by side in the path of the light beam. When only one slit is open, all of the light travels through it and hits a target on the other side of the slit in a bullet fashion. This demonstrates the particle nature of light. When both slits are open, the pattern on the target looks exactly like waves which are interfering with one another. The most puzzling thing is that these same patterns emerge when the light is sent in a steady stream or when one photon is released at a time.

There are two main conclusions which physicists have drawn from this experiment. The first is that you find what you are seeking. If you set up the experiment with one slit to detect particles, that's what is produced on the target. If you set up the experiment to detect waves, that will be the pattern produced regardless if it is a steady stream of light or one photon at a time.

As physicists attempted to come to grips with these results, some exotic theories arose. Some called into play the hidden variables found in entanglement experiments. Others suggested that each particle somehow "knows" beforehand which path to take so that it mysteriously cooperated with all of the other particles yet to be fired. Einstein even suggested a pilot wave ahead of the particle that served to guide it.

Physicist David Bohm developed a most intriguing theory. He described the two-slit experiment as photons dancing to a musical score. The score came from what he called the Seamless Whole which acted as a pool of information. This Whole included the physicist, the laser, the photons within the laser beam, the slits and the target, or measuring device. After the experiment was set up by the physicist, all elements of it became known to the Whole. For example, the conditions under which the experiment would be conducted was one element in the overall pool of information in the entire system. If the experiment were set up with one slit open to detect particles, that condition became a "known" element in the entire system. The photons then, simply went along with that information. In other words, they danced to that music. When the experimental conditions were changed, i.e., when the music changed, the photons simply did another dance in accordance. The photons didn't have to have prior knowledge of anything nor was an observer necessary.

Prior to the introduction of Bohm's theory, all of quantum physics had been absorbed in determining the state of a system in the present and the prediction of how that system would be in the future. This description was muddled in murky probabilities. Bohm's theory described the genuine motion of particles over time, not just the probability of where any one would be at any one time. This solidified the idea that the universe must be seen as a whole system and that anything which can be said of its individual elements at any one instance is only a partial description at best. Bohm's theories eventually came to be referred to as Bohmian Mechanics.

One of the interesting features of the two-slit experiment is that it allows a thing to be realized in two different ways. But, our daily experience would lead us to believe the words of Gertrude Stein in that "A rose, is a rose, is a rose." We can accumulate different sensations of it by looking at it, smelling it and even touching it, but alas, it remains a rose. But, the two-slit experiment demonstrates a thing becoming a wave. That's like a door knob turning into a sound depending on how you observe it. The entire concept is mind-boggling. Of such things, Heisenberg said, "What we learn about is not nature itself, but nature exposed to our methods of questioning." Perhaps someday we will have a broader concept of nature that will give the two-slit experiment a fitting context so that we can better understand the question we are asking of it.

Customer Review: Not easy to play with bare hands and too pricey*, but not all bad
Trying to play these myself, I have to play pretty forcefully to get a decent pitch. It's not nearly as easy to play as a better quality, non-toy version of bongos, but then, it's a whole lot sturdier than a quality wood & skin drum. The colors are vibrant and very appealing. These have withstood the abuses heaped on them by my kids from their toddler through preschooler years, and still look great. Buy a pair of mallets or drumsticks to go with these: it makes it a whole lot easier to play, and gives children more immediate gratification. *The "too pricey" comment was made when these were retailing at $35. The new list price of $20 seems much more reasonable, and a real bargain at the sale price of $13.99!

The other day at a staff meeting, one of my co-workers was talking about a project that had gone badly off the rails. "Per angusta ad augusta," I said as he concluded his tale of woe. Everyone looked at me uncomprehendingly, of course. "You know through difficulties to honors," I said.

Now, I am definitely no Latin scholar, but I do arrive at staff meetings armed with several memorized phrases from the ancient tongue, ready to whip them out whenever the occasion permits. My source? Its a breezy little tome titled, Amo, Amas, Amat and More; How to Use Latin to Your Own Advantage and to the Astonishment of Others. Its author is Eugene Ehrlich, a renowned dictionary editor and contributor to other books about words.

The book is straightforwardly presented, with the Latin phrases given in alphabetical order. Each entry consists of the phrase followed by a phonetic rendering to assist in pronunciation, then its English translation and finally, in most instances, an explanatory paragraph to help elucidate the more mysterious of the offerings.

One aspect of Amo, Amas, Amat that is particularly helpful is that the author will occasionally translate a phrase using an equivalent English expression that might not be a word-for-word rendering (although he does provide the exact translation in the follow-up paragraph).

An example: "Aliquando bonus dormitat Homerus" is translated as "You cant win 'em all," but a more precise rendering would be, "Sometimes even good Homer dozes." Ehrlich offers the history behind this phrase, which helps us to understand why our common expression about not being able to "win 'em all" is indeed a good way to translate the Latin in this case.

Many people have fragile egos and low self-esteem and keeping rhythm to dance is not so easy for many folks. It takes practice and perhaps even dancing lessons. Some folks do not wish to take dance lessons because it makes them feel silly, of course, everyone has to start somewhere and it's a lot sillier to be unhappy and overweight and do not nothing about it. That makes no sense at all. So, where can one start?

Probably the best place to start is to consider what type of music you like best and figure out where they play that music and see if you fit into that group of people. Every city has various dancing clubs and you can either look them up online or peruse the "what's happening" section of your local newspaper. I think what you'll soon find is that there are many choices and options. Thus you can pick what's best for your style, level of skill and attitude and you'll "feel like dancing, dancing, dance the night away!" It's time to get thin and find yourself as a healthier and happier you.

Customer Review: Not What I expected
I thought there is more on the dvd. This is poor... The "Making of" Is not a Making Of. It is just a little blabla...

Theres something tedious about musical recitals. Last night my daughter-in-law said that she hates them. I think that anyone with or without a good ear can learn to hate them. My daughter-in-law has a very good musical ear so she hates them Double Dutch.Besides, her family of 15 performs around Southern Idaho. All the kids but the three youngest take music. That leaves her with 10 kids who are taking music lessons on one or more instruments. You can see why she is tired of recitals.

I took my thirteen Idaho grandkids and five adults to the Golden Coral Restaurant last night. Tuesday night is Family Night and you can feed a child for $1.99! My total bill was about $100 plus a $30 tip for the poor soul who had to service us.

Cheap!

After we slopped the kids we went to a musical recital.

Watching for migrating polar bears looking for warmer weather, we slid into the parking lot of the musical store that was hosting the recital.

Authors note: Despite what the Coke ads say, Polar Bears and Penguins dont live together. Polar bears=Arctic, Penguins=Antarctic. Coke is messing with your childrens brains.

No polar bears have been sited in Idaho this winter. If this cold spell continues, it is only a matter of time.

Recitals never start on time. Ours not only didnt start on time, extra numbers were inserted. Since extra Christmas music was added, the students were allowed to use sheet music for those numbers.

Unfortunately, the students are not able to sight read at this early stage of development. Only the teachers can sight read music. Thats because all of those blasted little black marks are too small to read, there are too many of them, and you have to know what they mean.

Ive always though there is a God because some people can read sheet music. First the brain has to say, What is that? Oh! Its a note! What does the note mean? Oh! Its a C. Lets see, Every good boy does fine. Now to find that on the keyboard, flute hole, fiddle string, etc. Oh! Here it is. Now Ill give it a stroke, a tap, a flick and out will come a C. All this thinking has to be done ahead of time.

Its the reverse of Morse code. In Morse code coming in at 20 words-per-minute you listen to the code, decide what letter it is, and write or type the letter down. By the time you get to recording the letter, five other letters have come in and are being interpreted. Only the gifted can read more than 10 words-per-minute. Thats why they removed the code from Amateur Radio Operator exams.

See! There is a God!

You can say, God, here in Idaho. You also can still say, Christmas, except at the atheistic Wal-Mart stores. Anyway, I have a boycott there. They make really old people work.

Oh, yes! Music!

A recital is a torture chamber for the students and their relatives. Nobody else ever comes unless its another music teacher who has nothing to do.

The teachers claim that the purpose of a recital is to give the students experience in playing in public.

Well, most of the students dont want to play in public, will never ever be asked to play in public, or will be shot if they actually play in public (but not by their families who seldom shoot their own kids).

The rule of the recital is the worst first, the best last. Sometimes you can actually tell the difference. The last performers tend to be older teens that have had more than three lessons.

I might mention here that a dance recital is to be avoided at all cost.

In the Revolutionary War you could pay someone to serve for you. Give a few bucks to a vagrant on the street and have him attend the dance recital for you. He will want to get out of the cold to take a snooze. Of course he wont be able to sleep, but dont tell him that. Its all that tapping, tapping, tapping that will not only keep him awake but drive him bonkers.

The vagrant will be able to do something that you can't do. He can flee!

Dont try to hire a panhandler to be your substitute. They go to school to learn how to make their 500 bucks per day. They will just shrug you off. Some will say, Are you kidding? A dance recital!

When a music student makes a mistake in the first stanza you know that things will get worse. One trick is to claim that you have an ear infection (common here in Idaho with the polar bears and all). Stuff your ears with cotton.

It does help.

My wife uses those ear plugs she wears while swimming her 70 laps everyday.

A bad pianist, horn blower, violinist, guitar player, and especially a drummer, will make you say to yourself, Will this blasted piece ever end? Thats the time to brace your self for more horror.

Recitals just never end!

Eventually the recital will reach the point where your little darling is playing.

If she does poorly, you can slide under your chair by slowly sliding forward on your seat until your butt drops to the floor. Then grab your knees and pull them up to your chin, keeping your head down. Slide back up and clap and clap and clap when your little darling had played the last sour note.

Dont forget to tell your little darling how well she did on her solo.

If things go well for your little darling, you can sit up straight in your chair and point to your chest. Mimic the words Shes mine! Shes mine!

The kids usually get a snack at the end of a recital. The kids got a cookie last night.

Adults sometimes (but not last night) get a drink of punch and a cookie. You always want to be first in line for that.

That is the only good thing that can happen to you at a recital.

6/21/08 Before you read this review check out Coldplay's latest CD "Viva la Vida". It is light years ahead of this CD "X&Y". I guess I am so addicted to Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and other great bands of the 70s-80s that Coldplay falls flat on it's face for me. Or, my expectations of "almost uniformly" stellar British rock bands is unrealistic. As most people do when listening to music, one finds that you do compare the new with the old. And so, in fairness to the change in technology and my own personal taste, I compared this band to my current favorite in world rock music, the astonishing rock-your-rear-off Afro Celt Sound System Band whose singer Iarla O'Liondird's vocal range is so utterly astounding. (Even Josh Groban plays AFCSS at his live concerts). After listening four times to this CD "X&Y", I still found Chris Martin's nasal, and at times, irritatingly whiney voice boring and monotonously repetitive. He is up and down his vocal range over and over on nearly every song. About midway through the CD it felt like I was listening to the same song over and over with musical variations. For me the song lyrics were mostly juvenile and often trite. Especially on the song "X&Y". HOWEVER, Their band members' musicality and instrument talent is undeniable. For this reason I can say I somewhat enjoyed the CD. Overall, if I have to pick a listen to again, maybe, these songs merit a redux: "White Shadows"; "A Message"; "Low".

I can describe the latest release from Jazz sensation Wayman Tisdale for you with just one word Outstanding!

It's a rare day indeed that I get a CD from an artist that I can truthfully say does not have a bad track in the bunch. I'm more than happy to announce thats exactly what I must say about this one. There simply isnt a bad one in the bunch. No fillers here at all.

One of the refreshingly nice things about this CD is the way all of the participating artists seem to be really enjoying themselves. Combine that with the overall presentation and youve got one of Wayman Tisdales most impressive releases ever.

If you're even mildly into Jazz music you'll enjoy this CD. Overall In The Zone is an a great release. I give it my double thumbs up. You will not be disappointed with one single track.

While the entire CD is outstanding some of my favorites are track 2 - Watch Me Play, track 8 - Dont Take Your Love Away, and track 15 - No Me Without You

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 10 - Washington High. Outstanding!
