El Cantante

Though they don't look much alike, slight actor-singer Marc Anthony was born to play robust salsa sensation Héctor Lavoe. In addition to similar ancestry and vocal skills, Anthony has been building a respectable cinematic resume with roles in Big Night and Martin Scorsese's Bringing out the Dead. The title of El Cantante comes from a number Rubén Blades wrote for The Singer. Lavoe would make it his signature song. In the film, Anthony's wife, producer Jennifer Lopez, plays Puchi, the Nuyorican beauty who won Lavoe's heart. She narrates their story from the perspective of 2002 (the real-life Puchi passed away shortly afterwards). Leon Ichaso (Piñero) contrasts Lavoe's rise from Puerto Rican street singer to New York superstar with his fall from innocent immigrant to heroin-addicted ladies man. By the mid-1980s, Lavoe's popularity hit its peak, and Ichaso spends the rest of the time ticking off the tragedies of his final years: the break with trombonist Willie Colón (John Ortiz), stay in a mental ward, etc. It's a dynamic portrait, and Anthony and Lopez work well together, but despite the urban setting and Latin-flavored soundtrack, El Cantante follows virtually the same trajectory as Ray and Walk the Line (Ichaso has also directed biopics of Jimi Hendrix and Muhammad Ali). His movie looks and sounds authentic, but Lavoe's story might've been better served as nonfiction. There's a sense that there was more to the man than what appears on screen. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Customer Review: El cantante sings!
I loved this movie and I also love JLo and Marc Anthony! I think this movie was underrated. If you are truly interested in Hector Lavoe, you will love it. If you buy it just cause you want to see JLo and Marc, you probably won't like it. They are good in the movie but the story is what made it for me. Of course, it goes without saying, Marc Anthony's voice is supberb!
Customer Review: WONDERFUL....
I rented this film recently and was surprised at how good it was. The story depicts the stormy life and tragic end to the great salsa legend Hector Lavoe. This movie hits you in the heart from the start. It makes you care about the character and his music. I now own a cd of Hector Lavoe and I never knew I could like salsa. Who knew?? His music is amazing and the tragic events of his life makes you want to know the person behind the prose of his songs. My ears know good music when it hears it and this man was a icon. Hector Lavoe.......rest in peace! I'm not much of a fan of Jennifer Lopez but she played a good role. However, another actress (a more popular one) would have made this film more marketable to the non-Hispanic population ( mass audience).

Salsa is a form of social get together of the people which celebrates dance, music and culture. It is considered to be a faction of Latin rhythmic types which contains the clave beats. Mambo, Son, Rumba, Cha Cha Cha, Guaracha, Merengue, Songo, Timba and few others are some of the most recognized form of salsa. Salsa is the only among Latin genres to have come back and inclined West African tune.

Salsa has become gaining more and more recognition now. A lot of institutions have been opened to teach this form of dance. In fact, few marriages in NYC demands a salsa dance by the newly wedded couple. Many events are organized every year to host salsa in New York. The salsa festival is generally organized in the spirit of friendship and fun and the affection of dancing. In order to make the salsa festival a grand one, you should always look for a perfect venue to host the event. Some of the superb venues for salsa of tango event in New York are:

The Burgess Hall: It is the premier venue in Cambridgeshire. It has a sufficient free car parking area and is completely air-conditioned. It has a great semi-spung dance floor and other facilities.

Rush: 579 6th Avenue, New York City. It is a huge event ground that organizes brilliant events like salsa and tango. The entry fee is kept low.

Columbus 72: 246 Columbus Avenue in NYC. This venue is very famous and is among the best place to host a salsa or tango night. The place is completely air-conditioned. It offers brilliant services and facilities to the organizers and to the people.

Plumm: This venue was basically made to host salsa events. It has huge dancing floor with live music and great DJs.

A lot of fantastic salsa event venues have come up in last few years. Some of them are LQs, Gonzalez y Gonzalez, Club Iguana, The Red Lounge, Vudu Lounge and SOB's.

Salsa is a very beautiful form of dance. The slow motion dance touches your soul when you see others performing. The feeling you get is, excellent!

Malus Clothing - Latin For Evil - T-Shirt

Do you have a Latin girlfriend or boyfriend? Then you know what it feels like when they unleash their words of passion in Spanish during your private moments.

Would you like to give it back at them?

You don't need to speak fluent Spanish. Learn to ignite the fire of your lover with some sexy and romantic phrases in their own language. Heck, you can even turn on lovers who don't even speak Spanish with a few well timed passionate phrases.

Here are a few ways to use this hot, sexy language to your advantage.

Learn a Few Phrases

The first step is to learn some sexy or romantic Spanish words and phrases. Here's a couple to begin with.

My love. Mi amor. (mee ah-mohr.)

I've never felt this way before. Nunca me he sentido as. (noon-kah meh eh sehn-tee-doh ah-sEE.)

I've been thinking about you. He estado pensando en ti. (eh ehs-tah-doh pehn-sahn-doh ehn tee.)

I can't live without you. No puedo vivir sin ti. (noh pweh-doh vee-veer seen tee.)

I want you. Te deseo. (teh deh-seh-oh.)

I love you. Te amo. (teh ah-moh.)

Kiss me. Bsame. (bEH-sah-meh.)

Make love to me. Hazme el amor. (ahs-meh ehl ah-mohr.)

Pronunciation and Accent

Knowing the words and phrases is a good start. But they will be most effective if you say them the right way. Before you attempt to melt your lover with words, practice.

Number one, pronounce the word correctly. If you know someone who speaks the language, ask them to demonstrate the word or phrase for you. If you don't know someone who speaks Spanish, find a book or website that "spells out" each word phonetically.

Also, really try to understand what each word in a phrase means. Actually knowing what you are saying when you say it, and actually meaning it, will put more power behind the words.

After you have gotten the pronunciation down, practice saying the word or phrase over and over again. Do it whenever you are alone and have a free moment, like when you are riding in the elevator, putting gas in the car, washing dishes, and so on. You want to practice so much that, eventually, the words roll effortlessly off your tongue.

Spanish is one of the sexiest languages around. And, by learning a few simple words and phrases, you can begin to master the art of making love with words.

History: Fiction or Science? (Chronology, No. 1)

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Customer Review: Treading on sore toes?
The professional historians faint as prominent mathematician Doctor Fomenko et al research the known historical data and come to fairly controversial conclusions. For example, the English historians rage at the suggestion that the history of Ancient England was de facto a Byzantine import transplanted to the English soil by the fugitive Byzantine nobility. As the sign of recognition of the special role of the English historians who consider themselves the true scribes of World History, the cover of the present book portrays Tintoretto's Jesus Christ crucified on the Big Ben. The Russian historians brand it as pseudoscience because Dr Fomenko asserts that there was no such thing as the Tartar and Mongol invasion followed by over two centuries of slavery, providing a formidable body of documental evidence to prove his assertion. The so-called `Tartars and Mongols' were the actual ancestors of the modern Russians, living in a trilingual state and aspiring Global Empire with Arabic and Turkic spoken as freely as Russian. The ancient proto-Russian state was governed by a double structure of civil and military authorities and the hordes were actually professional armies with a tradition of lifelong conscription (the recruitment being the so-called `blood tax'). Their `invasions' were punitive operations against the regions that attempted tax evasion. Fomenko proves for a fact that official Russian history is a blatant forgery concocted by a host of German scholars brought to Russia by the usurper dynasty of the Romanovs. Their ascension to the throne was the result of conspiracy, so they charged these German historians-imports with the noble mission of making Romanov's reign look legitimate. Dr Fomenko et al prove Ivan the Terrible to be a collation of four rulers, no less. These rulers represented the two rival dynasties - the legitimate Godounovs and the ambitious Romanov upstarts. The European historians fume not only because Fomenko blows consensual Russian history to smithereens, successfully removing a crucial cornerstone from underneath the otherwise impeccable edifice of World History but for asserting that all medieval European Kings and Princes were but breakaway vice-regents and vassals of the Global Empire who badly needed glorious and very `ancient' past in order to legitimize their new independence from the Empire. Dr Fomenko adds insult to injury, wiping out one by one: the Ancient Rome: the foundation of Rome in Italy is dated to the 14th century A. D., the Ancient Greece and its numerous poleis, which he identifies as the mediaeval crusader settlements on the territory of Greece, the Ancient Egypt: the pyramids of Giza become dated to the 11th to 14th century A. D. and identified as the royal cemetery of the Global Empire, no less. The civilization of the `ancient'' Egypt is irrefutably dated to the 11th to 15th century A. D. following the breakthrough in decoding of the ancient Egyptian horoscopes cut in stone and painted on the temple walls. Arabic historians may find some consolation in the crucial historical role of the Ottoman Empire as a part of the Global empire in the 15th - 17th century. The trouble is that this Empire was initially a proto-Christian state, with Hagia Sophia identifiable as Temple of Solomon, but built in 1550-1557 A.D. by Sultan Suleiman according to Fomenko and Islam with all its key figures is datable to 15th 16th century A. D.! The Chinese historians are also an unhappy lot because Fomenko wipes out the Ancient History of China outright. No such history. Period. The compilation of the so-called Ancient Chinese History is reliably datable to the 17th 18th century only. It is perfectly recognizable as the Ancient European history, reworked and transcribed in hieroglyphs as yet another historical transplantation. The Divinity excommunicates Dr Fomenko because the history of religions according to Fomenko looks as follows: the pre-Christian period (before the 11th century and Jesus Christ ), Bacchic Christianity (11th to 12th century, before and after Jesus Christ), Jesus Christ Christianity (12th to 14th century) and its subsequent mutations (15th to 17th cy) into Orthodox Christianity, the Catholicism, Protestantism, Islam, Buddhism, and so on..; and The Old Testament written after the New Testament in xiv-xvi cy A.D., if you please! Everybody served? Saint Augustine was quite prescient when he said: "be wary of mathematicians, particularly when they speak the truth."
Customer Review: Has history been tampered with?
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RAZQNMXM4M9CL Has history been tampered with? Yes, it has! Did events and eras such as the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, the Roman Empire , the Dark Ages, and the Renaissance, actually occur within a very different chronology from what we've been told? Yes, they certainly did! The history of humankind is both drastically shorter and dramatically different than generally presumed. Why is it so? On one hand, it was usual custom to justify the claims to title and land by age and ancestry, and on the other the court historians knew only too well how to please their masters. The so called universal classic world history is a pack of intricate lies for all events prior to the 16th century. World history as we learn it today was entirely fabricated in the 16th-18th centuries. It's likely that nobody told you before, but there is not a single piece of firm written evidence or artefact that is reliably and independently dated prior to the 11th century. Naturally, after what you've learned in school and university, you will not easily believe that the classical history of ancient Rome, Greece, Asia, Egypt, China, Japan, India, etc., is manifestly false. You will point accusing finger to the pyramids in Egypt, to the Coliseum in Rome and Great Wall of China etc., and claim, aren't they really ancient, thousands of years ancient? Well, there is no valid scientific proof that they are older than 1000 years! The oldest original written document that can be reliably dated belongs to the 11th century! New research asserts that Homo sapiens invented writing (including hieroglyphics) only 1000 years ago. Once invented, writing skills were immediately and irreversibly put to the use of ruling powers and science. The consensual chronology we live with was essentially crafted in the 16th century by the Jesuits. The world history was compiled from contradictory mix of innumerable copies of ancient Latin and Greek manuscripts and other irrefutable proofs delivered by late mediaeval astronomers that were cemented by the authority of writings of the Church Fathers. Early in life, we learn about ancient history. Children love the magical lessons of history - they are like fairy tales. Teachers recite breathtaking stories; very soon We learn by heart the names and deeds of brave warriors, wise philosophers, fabulous pharaohs, cunning high priests and greedy scribes. We learn of gigantic pyramids and sinister castles, kings and queens, dukes and barons, powerful heroes and beautiful ladies, emaciated saints and low-life traitors. Ancient history is based documents, manuscripts, printed books, paintings, monuments and artefacts - called primary sources. The problem is that neither these ancient documents, nor events described therein can be irrefutably dated, moreover they contradict each other for the most part. When a school textbook tells us that Genghis Khan in year X or Alexander in year Y, have each conquered half of the world, it means only that it is so said in some of the written sources. There are no answers to simple questions: When were these primary sources written? Where and by whom were these sources found? It is wrongly presumed that ancient and medieval chronicles, written by Genghis Khan's or Alexander the Great contemporaries and eyewitnesses, are readily available. Actually, only sources written hundreds or even thousands of years after the events are there, compiled mostly in the 16th 18th centuries, or even later. As a rule, these sources suffered considerable multiple manipulations, falsifications and distortions by editing. At the same time, innumerable originals of ancient documents under various pretexts were destroyed in Europe under various pretexts. The names of persons and geographical sites often changed meaning and location during the course of the centuries. Geographical locations became clearly defined on maps only with the advent of printing. This made possible the circulation of identical copies of the same map for purposes of the military, navigation, education and governance tasks. Historians from Oxford say: "hey, everybody knows that Julius Caesar lived in the first century B.C. `Julius Caesar' statement is only a point of view as there is simply no irrefutable documentary proof that Julius Caesar or any other great name of antiquity ever existed. Better than that - extremely rare sources that can be reliably dated back to the 10th-14th centuries A D, do not show the polished picture of classical history. They show a picture both contradictory and confusing. All methods of dating of ancient sources and artefacts are erroneous: Radio-carbon C14 method produces dating with exactitude of plus minus 1500 years, therefore it is too crude for dating of events in historical timeframe! The Almagest tractate, which lies as corner stone contemporary chronology, compiled in the 2nd century A D by Ptolemy, the founding father of astronomy, contains astronomical data of 9th to 16th century! The Bronze Age,that has supposedly began 5000 years ago. Bronze is made of 90% copper and 10% tin, but the technology for tin extraction dates back to 14th century A D!. All eclipses contained in manuscripts, like Thucydides one, relating 'ancient' events have exclusively medieval dating. All horoscopes cut in stone or painted in Egyptian temples, like Dendera have exclusively early medieval dating solutions. Not quite what you have learned in school? Open your eyes, and, you will find sufficient proof to reach step by step the inevitable conclusion that the classical chronology is false and therefore, that the history of ancient and medieval world universally accepted today, is also false. Have a fresh outlook on everything said or printed about "ancient" and "enigmatic" Roman, Greek and Egyptian, medieval as well as all other "lost and found" civilizations. Antiquity and Dark Ages are phantoms invented in the 16th 18th and polished in 19th 20thcenturies. Human civilization is in fact barely 1000 years old! This book will change your perception of History forever! What if Ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt were invented during Renaissance? What if The Old Testament was a rendition of events of the Middle Ages? What if Jesus Christ was born in 1053 and crucified in 1086 AD? Sounds Unbelievable? Not after you've read "History: Fiction or Science?" by Anatoly Fomenko, the genius mathematician. Armed with astronomy and computers Anatoly Fomenko turns History into a rocket science.

If you've got aching joints and arthritis, dancing can help. It may be hard to believe, but moving your joints helps relieve joint pain.

When you dance, you strengthen the muscles around the joints, which helps take stress off your joints. It also reduces joint stiffness and builds flexibility and endurance. Dancing can improve your mood and self-esteem. It helps you sleep better, keeps weight under control, and gives you more energy.

There's also a certain sense of accomplishment that comes from dancing. After all, pushing yourself to exercise - when your body hurts - isn't easy. In addition to arthritis pain relief, dancing for exercise can offset other health problems, like osteoporosis, diabetes, and heart disease.

Whether you have arthritis or not, a warm-up is a smart place to start.Going into an exercise activity with cold muscles can only cause pain and possibly injury.

Try these warm-up exercises. Do three to five repetitions each:

1. Put hands on hips. Bend from the waist on one side, then come back up. Repeat on the other side.

2. Raise one or both shoulders up toward the ears. Lower and repeat.

3. Extend arms out at both sides. Rotate arms forward, then in reverse.

4. Stand with feet shoulder width apart and toes turned slightly out. Rotate to your left side. Then rotate to your right side.

For any adult, including people that have arthritis, 30 minutes of exercise three times a week is recommended.

Accumulate it in small amounts of movement through out the day...start with 5-10 minutes and increase slowly.

Now put on your favorite music and dance!

Deva Premal sings with the voice of an angel, the heart of one who has known love and loss, and the soul of an enlightened Master. I have had the distinct pleasure of following Deva and life partner Miten's music for several years, since reviewing their album Embrace back in early 2003. I can also highly recommend their other titles, including The Essence and Love is Space. With the forthcoming The Moola Mantra (release date August 28, 2007), I'm delighted to return to this duo's exquisite brand of devotional chant music that has garnered fans all over the world, with total CD sales surpassing half a million.

The Moola Mantra is perhaps their finest album yet, gracefully weaving Deva's transcendently pure voice, sitar, bansuri flute, dotar, tabla, piano, string quartet and ambient electronica into a richly layered tapestry of sacred chants that honor all traditions, religions, creeds and spiritual paths. Joined by superb musicians including Jai Uttal, Benjy Wertheimer, Manos and Kit Walker, Deva and Miten transport the listener into a world of blissful grace. For nearly 20 years they have traveled all over the world, offering themselves as living examples of male/female energy balance, sharing their music as a sacred tool for healing and intimacy.

I'm happy to tell you that Deva and Miten will be on a concert tour. From August 31 through mid-December throughout the United States, with a stop in Calgary and the Bahamas. They'll be in Santa Rosa California on September 29. I hope to see some of you there. Even after repeated listenings, I find that The Moola Mantra feeds my soul in ways that only my heart understands, and receives my highest recommendation.

YES, MY *GOD* YES!! Cool, this version has an added song and the lyrics...(WHO DOESN'T LOVE READING ALONG?!?!?!). But at a price this over-bloated, PLEASE DON'T BOTHER!!!! No human with decent sense would pay for this!!!! Half of the tracks are upbeat which I prefer Coldplay's music to portray, and after studying this album's nooks and crannies, I found just TWO duds. b^_^b White Shadows, Fix You, Twisted Logic, Square One, Low, Speed Of Sound, Talk & X&Y are amongst the great tracks. But then you have filler tracks such as What If and Swallowed In The Sea. The rest of the CD is full of decent if just a tad forgetful tracks; A Message, The Hardest Part & Till Kingdom Come definitely fill my mind first. I was SO looking forward to this release because I have their 2 previous albums and I highly enjoyed tracks such as In My Place, Clocks and Daylight, for their uplifting, positive demeanor. Coldplay has an interesting lyric here and there, and my initial thoughts told me that it wasn't enough. White Shadows was a low point for me, but thank goodness I seen a quirky but awesome video to accompany the song, and I was totally, totally hooked! With that said, I can't wait to experience their new sound in mid-late 2008 or early 2009: I bet they release it around then and it'd be best if it were better than this one! Or at least here's to hoping... *Cheers* Keep it comin', Coldplay! You have fans other than the emotional girls that follow you. Some men, of all different walks of life appreciate your sensitive side too! ^_^ Cover Art: B- Inside Art: A- Songwriting: B+ Vocals: C+ Vocal Emotion: B+ Vocal Acrobatics: F+ Length: A+ 59.75/13 = 3.98076923076923 3.98 stars. Customer Review: Well, I can rate the first 13 tracks...
I don't have this import version, but I WOULD get it if it were 25 bucks or less. 46 bucks + is super-ridiculous and anyone who shells out that much is either: 1. Stupidly rich 2. Rich and stupid 3. Just plain rich 4. a HUGE, HUGE fan 5. All of the above No human with decent sense would pay for this otherwise. I fall into that category and none of the above ones (*LOL*!!). Here goes, Half of the tracks are upbeat which I prefer Coldplay's music to portray, and after studying this album's nooks and crannies, I found just TWO duds. b^_^b White Shadows, Fix You, Twisted Logic, Square One, Low, Speed Of Sound, Talk & X&Y are amongst the great tracks. A Taste of Salsa, Volume II (Spanish & English Language)

In Volume II, Lisa and Andres build on the steps and lead/follow techniques that were introduced in Volume I. In addition, they show you more advanced turning combinations and new ways of moving across the dance floor. They also pinpoint suggestions for developing your own style. In addition, equal attention is paid to both the leads and follows so that you become a dynamic couple and a solid individual dancer. With these new patterns, your passion for Salsa and your confidence on the dance floor will continue to grow.

In this volume, the following steps are covered:
Basic three turn combination
Hand over heart turning combination
Hand over shoulder turning combination
The wrap
Adding style to your dancing
The walk
Putting it all together

With a bit of practice, you will soon become a Salsero.

Instruction for all volumes in the A Taste of Salsa series is given in both English and Spanish.
Customer Review: Great basics
If you are a novice and looking to learn in a correct and structured way, these videos (Vol I & II) are very sound and easy to understand. The videos are introductory, so if you already know the basics, perhaps they are not for you. Don't pay attention to the criticism of those who weren't smart enough to read the description and look for more information about the videos from the internet or the instructors' website. The videos are clearly labeled basic. That's why they are titled "A Taste of...." I gave it four stars because even though the intent to make the tapes universal by making them bilingual is good, it does tend to slow the lessons a bit. Why not use subtitles for the alternate language?
Customer Review: Salsa Instruction Starts Here
For those who wish to learn salsa through videos, this is the one for you. True, there are excellent intructional videos in the market; but without a strong basics, all those fancy moves shown in more advanced videos will not work for you. The dance instructors give you enough tips and alert you of common pitfalls so you can start dancing with proper form and style.

Here today, gone tomorrow, bars have a reputation for short-term success. But a few have the ability to ride the times and keep on top of the game.

Ten years ago, I was sitting in The Groucho Club one late summers evening discussing with a now well known haute couture designer, the new wave of drinking culture that was enveloping the capital, arguing that London really had never been so exciting. Up until that point, drinks were very much a secondary element of the overall experience wine was simply white or red, beer came only in a pint glass and vodka was whatever paint-stripper the barman chose to pour. But in the nineties, we were on the cusp of a cocktail movement. New-world wines were making the Chardonnay and Shiraz as commonplace as the Bordeaux, while new conceptual drinks like Red Bull were seriously shaking up the market, broadening peoples drinking landscape and challenging us to think about drinking as more of a lifestyle. Slowly, what was behind the bar appeared to be taking over the focus of the night. People were whispering rumours of late night bars that were open into the wee hours, where glamourous glitterati rubbed hips with the international jet-set over Manhattans and Martinis. They, along with The Groucho, were the places everyone wanted to be seen and their popularity seemed untouchable to all but the most cynical.

Of course, everything has a lifespan, we cynically agreed: fashion is dead in a season, and a fashionable bar well you wouldnt want to bet the house on it would you? We both concluded that fashions simply cant last and those bars, which today were the subject of snaking queues, would quickly turn to yesterdays news as would the drinks that were being quaffed within. Of course, in most cases we werent far wrong. Mondo, Saint, Titanic, Riki Tik... all have fallen by the wayside having once been celebrity favourites of their day. Many others have turned from exclusive A-list excellence to godawful tourist tat. The Gin Sling became the Sea Breeze became the Bramble became the Vanilla Mojito

But its not all doom and gloom. Today, another ten years hence, I am back in the same leather couch of the same Groucho, and ordering from the menu a Red Bull, a drink whose ability to transcend fads and trends seems to symbolise the aspirations of nightlife culture. It has history and heritage and has attained almost timeless appeal. Fashionable works for a while, but every owner, manager and promoter hopes and strives for one thing ultimately and that is to be the next classic. Because the classics, while small in number, exist on a plain far superior to fashion. Dotted amongst the sprawling community of one-off wonders that populate the bar world, a few classics really have stood the test of time, riding the cyclical waves to achieve immortal credibility. The Groucho is one of those timeless classics. Through the years it has always been at the top of its game, its members list comprising the same names that populate the pages of the celebrity press together with the successful and powerful in the world of media.

Nowadays, octogenarian founder members sit comfortably alongside young achievers and its long-term future would appear to be set in stone. Embassy is another long-time winner or more to the point, its ever-present Rock n Roll proprietor, Mark Fuller, who ran the original Embassy twenty years ago with equal success. This most recent incarnation of one of Londons most famous clubs, now with a fine dining restaurant that counts among the capitals very best, and glitzy nightclub in the basement, is a rare constant in the oscillating world of the fashionable. Another face that has always been associated with bar and club supremacy is Jake Panayiotou who ran original celebrity hot-spot, Browns for a decade before moving on in its hay-day. His last few years at the helm of the Wellington Club in Knightsbridge have seen the age-old members club climb to yet new heights. But its not only members clubs that can battle through the ages unscathed. Music-led venues such as Medicine Bar in Islington, Bar Rumba, The Cross, Bar Vinyl and The End have all proved their mettle, while the likes of Hanover Grand, The Gardening Club and Iceni have collapsed into the annuls of hip history.

So, what is it that sets the one-hit-wonders apart from the immortals? What makes a classic? Three characteristics seem to pump through the veins of all the long-term winners.

Quality, choice and adaptability, says Cas, The Grouchos pre-eminent bar manager, as he deftly shakes up cocktails from behind the bar. You have to offer a quality experience in the drinks, the music, the food and the people. You must give customers what they want and you have to adapt to the times. Subtly underlining the point, my Red Bull silently arrives at the table on its own tray, dressed with a single, perfectly folded napkin.

Can staying power really be so simple to achieve? With twenty years of success behind The Groucho, the club is quite an authority on the subject, but it was Darwin who concluded that the fittest win out at the expense of their rivals because they succeed in adapting to their environment. Sounds pretty familiar to me and, lets face it, you cant argue with Darwin.

HERE TO STAY

COVENT GARDEN: The End & AKA

One of the capitals most respected dance music venues, with Mr C behind its success. Music is always ahead of its time and drinks are a world away from most dance music venues.

A favourite media hangout, The Groucho is like a party in your own front room with the kind of people that anybody would eat their own right arm to have turn up at their party. Now with a more modern bar on the first floor to complement the leather and wood ground floor classic, it is a members bar that suits all and bound to see in another twenty year term.

The Piano Tribute to Coldplay

Customer Review: Revolutionary
About two years ago, I borrowed Coldplay's second record "A Rush of Blood to the Head" from a local library. I was going througha very rough time in my life, and this music spoke to me. This music changed my life and my whole outlook on life. It basically infused my being, and became a part of me. I put the copy back on the library shelf and bought my own, and then I picked up their first record "Parachutes". This piano composition of classic Coldplay songs is the best composition out of all three released so far. We have "Pickin' on Coldplay: A Bluegrass Tribute" and we also have "The String Quartet Tribute to Coldplay." This is the third and most recent tribute album. Coldplay must have changed a lot of lives. Anyway, the pieces here match the songs on both albums, and you feel a certain poignancy when listening to this tribute album. The fact that Coldplay's music is so powerful that it inspired three bands of completely different types of music to do a tribute album... that's amazing. That's more than amazing.

Clocks

The Second Single to Be Lifted from Coldplay's "a Rush of Blood to the Head" Album. Includes Two Exclusive Live B-sides: "Yellow" from the Kcrw Radio Show and "in My Place" Recorded in Manchester 2002.
Customer Review: Clocks - the longer single
I will not discuss the song Clocks, supposing that you have already heard it by now. Crests of Waves and Animals capture Coldplay wearing their Echo & The Bunnymen influence on their sleeves. And their inclusion onto A Rush of Blood To The Head would have added some much-needed diversity since they are both far more bouyant than most of the album's songs. The live recording of Yellow, strangely enough, doesn't seem to have an audience. It's just Chris Martin singing along with his piano, nothing else. I myself prefer the full band version. The live recording of In My Place is a little on the messy side when it comes to mixing. Martin's voice gets a little off-key at times and the crowd, at one point in the beginning, becomes louder than the band. Aside from those details, it sounds just like the album version.
Customer Review: Best Coldplay Non-LP
I recently started trying to find all the Coldplay singles, most of which are hard to find. This is by far the best I've found so far. I would reccomend this highly to anyone who likes Coldplay at all, and it's a great first single with which to start a Coldplay collection.

Shakira Rockin' Concert Doll By Mattel (Camoflage)

Music Within is a film based on the true life story of Richard Pimentel, the man who created the Americans with Disabilities Act. Pimentel becomes deaf after a bombing in the Vietnam War. When he comes home, two influential things happen: he is told he can't enter college; and he meets Art Honeyman, a man with cerebral palsy. Pimentel finds his calling in life: to help those with disabilities get jobs and be accepted by the general public.

Fans of uplifting, touching stories will love this film. Anyone who knows someone who is disabled (which is pretty much everyone) can appreciate what Pimentel was able to do with his life's work.

I particularly liked Pimentel's wit and humor portrayed in the film. After watching the featurettes of Pimentel's speeches, I found that many of the film's great lines of dialogue came directly from the man himself. I also loved Art's character with his undeniable charm.

This film made me want to change the world. It's films like this that give me hope in humanity, that drive me to keep that hope. It made me believe in the good in humanity.

The cast of this film is incredible! The acting is superb. Ron Livingston was a delightful surprise for the lead role, and he does very well in portraying the talented and humorous public speaker. If you see the actor who portrayed Art Honeyman (Michael Sheen) speak, you'll be amazed at how different he is from the character he played. Not only does he portray very accurately a man with cerebral palsy, but he manages to capture Honeyman's sharp wit and humor perfectly.

The special features of the DVD include several deleted scenes, a "making of" featurette and clips from a speech given by Richard Pimentel as he relates the major events of the film. At 94 minutes, the film does feel a little short compared to most films made these days, but it does well to present this amazing story to its viewers.

I think everyone can benefit from watching this film. I believe it will inspire many to fight for their own causes and to perhaps view the disabled in a new light.

My husband and I saw the trailer for this film while watching another DVD. The trailer alone affected us like no other. We knew we had to see this film as soon as possible. We just knew we would love it, and we did. The extras on this film are excellent glimpses behind the scenes and into the real story behind the dramatization.

When should the male dancer begin to lead his partner into her six-count or eight-count footwork once the swing music begins? The answer is that he should begin leading her on any of the song's downbeats; that is, on the "1" count, the "3" count, the "5" count or the "7" count. These "base beats" are the backbone or pulse of a song! You don't need to be a trained musician to understand a song's tempo (or timing), just listen to music and pick out the rhythm section (drums, bass, guitar or piano).

To take the pulse of the song and determine its number of beats per minute (bpm), count these downbeats for fifteen seconds and then multiply by four. Very slow swing songs have around 70 bpm and very fast ones have upwards of 200 bpm. The swing songs that I personally enjoy dancing to the most, average about 125 bpm which coincidently approximates my optimum cardio-training heart rate when I exercise. Notice that these downbeats differ from the upbeats that occur on the "2" count, the "4" count, the "6" count or the "8" count. In St. Louis Imperial Swing, we begin stepping immediately on any of the music's downbeats; however, this is not true of all styles of dance. In the Cha-Cha, for instance, dancers begin stepping after any of the music's upbeats.

Beats per minute became common terminology in popular music during the disco era because of its usefulness to DJs; and it remains important in dance music today because both our style of dance and our footwork rhythms are determined by the tempo of the music! The original or classic style of Imperial Swing, which is danced "in the round," is performed to music with a faster tempo (130-185 bpm) using primarily the slower single step and double step footwork rhythms. Today's contemporary style of Imperial Swing, which is danced within a slot, is a combination of both East Coast Swing (135-175 bpm) and West Coast Swing (75-115 bpm). Dancers perform this popular, "slot-bop" hybrid to music with a slower tempo (100-135 bpm), and they use primarily the faster, triple step footwork rhythms. Remember, the terms are music timing (or tempo) and footwork rhythms (or steps) but not vice versa!

The "time signatures" of different music styles tell dancers how many beats there are to a measure, and which note represents that beat. Swing music uses 4/4 timing; that is, there are 4 beats to a measure (4/4) and the quarter note gets the beat (4/4). For example, on the 1 and 2 count of your six-count, triple step footwork, the "1" is an eighth note (or a half-beat) and the "and of 1" is an eighth note (or a half-beat). Together they add up to a quarter note or 1 beat; and the "2" count is a quarter note or 1 beat. On the 3 and 4 count, the "3" is an eighth note (or a half-beat), and the "and of 3" is an eighth note (or a half-beat). Together they add up to a quarter note or 1 beat; and the "4" count is a quarter note or 1 beat. These 2 beats bring the cumulative total up to 4 beats or one measure.

Finally, on the 5 - 6 breakstep, the "5" count is a quarter note (or 1 beat) and the "6" count is a quarter note (or 1 beat). These final two 2 counts bring the total up to six beats or one and a half measures. To summarize this footwork count, dancers take eight steps in six beats of the music. Good dancers let the music tell them what to do with their feet. If they begin their footwork on any of the song's downbeats, and then end it on the sixth (or eighth) beat, then they are dancing in time with the music and finishing their steps when they are supposed to. As Skippy Blair, the renowned swing dance teacher, author and recipient of the California Swing Dance Hall of Fame Award, tells her students: "please don't tell me how long to hold the beat; just tell me what the count is, so I can place my feet!

Coming Out of the Dark

Designed as a companion to the singer's 1991 Into The Light--World Tour concert video, this look behind the scenes in Gloria Estefan's career draws drama and urgency from her recovery following a disastrous bus accident, which crippled the Cuban-American performer even as her popularity pushed further into the pop mainstream. Produced for the video arm of her record company, Coming Out of the Dark is hardly an objective documentary, laced as it is with testimonials from executives and frankly designed as a valentine to the feisty star; when we're given an "informal" look at Estefan composing new material in her music room, there isn't a figurative hair out of place as captured through these expertly shot segments.

The story, however, is intrinsically compelling, and Estefan offers her fans glimpses into the genesis of the songs from her Into the Light album. The singer's steely resolve, which doubtless explained the speed of her recovery, is visible, too, as is her sure sense of command over recording sessions. Brief performance excerpts show her saucy style of salsa-drenched pop, as well as less satisfying stabs at boiler-plate pop-rock songs that were aimed squarely at the charts. A segment chronicling a video shoot with choreographer-turned-director Kenny Ortega reveals both the technical intricacy of shooting elaborate dance sequences and the hyperbolic coddling platinum stars can expect from their most diplomatic handlers. --Sam Sutherland
Customer Review: THAT MOVIE IS THE BEST

Customer Review: Re: ASAP
Does this Moves show the accicent and does it show her recovery

This may sound simple but you simply must take lessons and if possible take two or even three a week if you can; especially at the start.

Why do we recommend you take so many lessons each week? Salsa music is complicated, may beats interwoven, and it takes time to tune your ears and feet to the rhythms.

By taking so many lessons at the beginning it reinforces what you are learning and will pay big dividends later on in the learning process.

When starting to learn Salsa its better to join a group lesson; private lessons are great for working on specific parts of your dancing but you will not get them most out of them until you have the basics down.

When joining a group lesson pick one for your level; its better to under estimate your ability than over estimate it.

There is nothing more off putting then arriving at your first lesson and find yourself out of your depth; surrounded by come dancing contestants!

Some tips on choosing the right group to learn with.

1) A class that runs for 6 to 10 weeks at least once a week.
2) The lessons are progressive; this is where you build up each week on the moves learned.

In your firs couple of months you should look too:

2 progressive classes each week

1 night out practice session at a club or event

1 private lesson after approx 5 weeks or more not essential but great to work on specifics.

Your First Lesson

Well done you have made it to your first class. May be you have come on your own or brought a dance partner. One thing we can guaranty is that you are feeling nervous.

You are worried that you have no rhythm, that you have two left feet which are on backwards. Most of all you are worried about falling flat on your face not able to dance Salsa.

As this is a beginners class look around you will see every one is looking and feeling exactly the same. You are not alone.

Remember its about having fun Its not a competition.

Here are some basic rules about lessons you should stick to what ever your level.

1. Find a teacher that suits you, its not one size fits all. There are many Salsa teachers and many ways to teach Salsa each person needs different things to enable them to learn. If your first teacher dose not do it for you find another. Your learning so get the most out of it by having a teacher and class that suits you.

2. Stay focused on what is being taught. This may sound a little simple but if you only have an hour to learn why waste it on chatting; you can do that after at the bar.

There are 1000s of distractions in class, your partner, other class members, that new cute dance partner that your about to dance with. Remember youre paying to learn Salsa; get your moneys worth.

3. Swap partner during the lesson. Yes thats right dance with different people. You may have come with a friend or significant other and want to dance with them. If the instructor is asking you to rotate your partners join in.

Why do this? it will speed up the learning process and get you used to dancing with different people; you will be doing this in the clubs. The major benefit is learning to lead and read a lead; by changing partners it will teach you to make the connection with your dance partner which will make your Salsa experiences much more pleasurable.

4. Face the same way as the instructor you are trying to follow. This will simply help you pick up the moves they are teaching much quicker. Sounds simple but you will be amazed out how many people dont do this.

5. Count out loud yes in the classes count out loud this is the one thing you should do all the time in class. I stress do this in the class so you dont have to do it in the Salsa club where it would not be accepted.

Both you and your partner should do this in the classes. Dancing in time to the rhythm is the most important part of dancing salsa. The simplest of moves or sequences look amazing when danced in time with the music.

6. Write down the move or sequence. Give your self time at the end of the class to write down what you have learnt. You will quickly develop a short hand for the different turns and moves that make up a sequence.

Dont ever stop doing this at what ever level you are at. I bet your instructor writes down the new sequences they learn. Again a very simple idea but it will speed up your learning no end.

Ok here is something that you need to understand it will take approximately 2 months to start find you feet. Some people are quicker but every one has that moment of enlightenment eventually when they feel the Salsa rhythm in their sole and the feet begin to follow.

We have said this before its about having fun not competing.

Antonio Carlos Jobim: An All Star Tribute

WINNER OF...
1995 JazzTimes Reader Poll- Best Video- First Runner Up

Direct from Brazil in his last recorded performance, Antoine Carlos Jobim (1927-1994) is joined by an international delegation of jazz giants to recreate his classic melodies in a beautiful, concert-length “Thank You.” With over four hundred songs to his credit including the unforgettable Girl From Ipanema, Jobim virtually single handedly brought the world Bossa Nova by adapting the percussive excitement of the samba to the intimacy of the guitar while echoing the melodies and harmonies of Cool Jazz. This classic, concert-length "Thank You" includes: Girl From Ipanema, Once I Loved, O Grande Amor, No More Blues, Wave and more
Customer Review: Farewell To A Legend
"Tom" Jobim died only a few months after this concert, so it was one of his last performances. He was truly a legend and if you love music you really need to acquaint yourself with his. Beautifully complex rhythms and harmonies that do not wear thin with repeated listening--the hallmark of great music. Even without understanding the lyrics his music evokes combinations of deep emotions, including a sad/sweet longing that has no English translation from the Portuguese. I'll not mention all of the artists that appear in this concert, but only draw your attention to Gal Costa, who has become one of my favorite Brazilian singers. Check out her earlier CDs. You will not be disappointed!
Customer Review: Impressive
Before watching this DVD I had never heard of Gal Costa. What a pleasant surprise to see her perform. Antonio himself appears in this one for Luiza and Wave: very nice. I couldn't appreciate John Henricks performance, too much scatting and not very good. That's just my opinion. Gonzalo Rubalcaba didn't impress me either. For me, the real standout performance was by Gal Costa. She does very cool A Felicidade with Herbie; and then an amazing So Todos Fossem Iguais a Voce. Also, Herbie is an amazing keyboard player. It is as though the instrument is part of him. Buy it!

One of the more fascinating styles is the Turkish belly dance. The dance music is characterized by the sounds of the oboe, clarinet, kanoon, finger cymbals and hand drums. Turkish dance costumes are among the more risqu of the cabaret styles, baring plenty of leg and cleavage. Similar to Greek and Armenian it is usually faster than Egyptian dance music, and often there are less rhythmic changes. Turkish belly dancers spread their traditional dance around the wider world, and enchanted their audiences when they appeared on dance stages in countries from America to Argentina; from the Arabian Peninsula to England and from Japan to Italy.

Turkish belly dance has been at least 500 years of history. The most important influence on it came from the Roma (Gypsies) people of Turkey. Today this style of dancing often struggles against the morals of a Muslim country but is generally still accepted because of its deep history. As artists they dare to see how far they can take sensuality into sexuality. The costumes consist of a bra, a belt and a skirt. Among current designs, hip accentuation's are built directly onto the skirt in lieu of a belt.

Turkish belly dance is something that is quite closely related to that of the cabaret style and is recognizable in that reference. The dresses that are usually used in this form of dance are quite embellished and adorned with different sorts of glittering objects such as jewels and beads. Turkish Belly dance is a dance style with a long and significant history in Turkey. It has exerted a considerable influence on the development of modern American cabaret style belly dance. A good description is that it is very earthy, and tends to have more weighted and even suggestive moves.

As you become aware of the many facets of oriental dance, keep in mind that there is no specific style considered right, or correct. All of the various styles are beautiful, inspirational and can elevate our thinking and even ourselves to a higher level. As you learn to dance it is up to you to develop the style, the expression and moves that most reflect your inner being. The only way to know this is to expose yourself to as many styles as you can. If you make sure you study with the best teachers and use the best tools you will find that your expression of this wonderful dance will shine through and entice those who have come to watch you dance.
