The book has well written, very musical phrases. The author suggests usage with several standards that should be in everyone's play book and it's fun to work them in with tunes you already know - in the proper keys. Take them apart, and there is something to learn in most of them. Great for browsing. The printing is good and the binding isn't troublesome on the rack. Nice experience. I would have rated it a five, but some of the pages have a tendency to work loose.

I try to spend a half hour with it every night. This book will appeal to a wide range of interests. Whether you are a composer interested in theory, or a keyboardist enhancing your chops, there is something here for you. Most examples are four-measures long, but rich in musicality (kind of like what the Bach chorales are for those studying classical music.) The examples progress from simple chord progressions to more complex, and each is one is clearly explained. Nice melodies too! It is apparent that the author has spent a lot of time with each of the sub-genres (swing, ballads, blues, Latin, etc.) and has distilled his knowledge into a neat recipe book that will serve as a launching point for those wishing to further their expertise.

Legend Vega is scheduled to release her newest CD this summer, Personal Space. Fans characterize Legend's style as a cross between Mariah Carey and a female version of Ricky Martin. She was born under the lights of Broadway in New York City but raised to the beat of Salsa and Merengue on the hot sands of Puerto Rico. Legend Vega is an experienced singer, songwriter, and model. She has just finished recording her newest CD with all of her own material. Her mainstream pop style and her Latin background make her an excellent crossover artist for the U.S. market. Her album features a broad mix of pop music recorded in English but with many Latin influences.

Legend has sung in a variety of venues from Caribbean resorts to outdoor festivals, and even on Broadway. She has performed with famous artists such as Elton John as an opening act at the Conquistador. On Broadway she performed as the lead vocalist in Tony and Tinas Wedding where she sang 32 songs nightly under director Larry Pellegrini. She has also exhibited her vocal skills as a duet partner and backup singer on various CDs for other artists.

In addition to her talents on stage, she also enjoys writing songs. She identifies themes, composes the lyrics, and develops the melody for all of her works. She has also been very involved in the arrangements of each of the songs on her new album. Originally released in March 1964, this collaboration between saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist João Gilberto came at seemingly the end of the bossa nova craze Getz himself had sparked in 1962 with Jazz Samba, his release with American guitarist Charlie Byrd. Jazz Samba remains the only jazz album to reach number one in the pop charts. In fact, the story goes that Getz had to push for the release of Getz/Gilberto since the company did not want to compete with its own hit; it was a good thing he did. Getz/Gilberto, which featured composer Antonio Carlos Jobim on piano, not only yielded the hit "Girl from Ipanema" (sung by Astrud Gilberto, the guitarist's wife, who had no professional experience) but also "Corcovado" ("Quiet Night")--an instant standard, and the definitive version of "Desafinado." Getz/Gilberto spent 96 weeks in the charts and won four Grammys. It remains one of those rare cases in popular music where commercial success matches artistic merit. Bossa nova's "cool" aesthetic--with its understated rhythms, rich harmonies, and slightly detached delivery--had been influenced, in part, by cool jazz. Gilberto in particular was a Stan Getz fan. Getz, with his lyricism, the bittersweet longing in his sound, and his restrained but strong swing, was the perfect fit. In history, seemingly all great things are happenstance. One could certainly say the same about this serendipitous recording. A quiet, gentle, beautiful record of 8 songs (and 2 reprises) it created a time capsule of that era that surprisingly stands up to todays standards. There are few things more thrilling then standing on a stage playing an instrument or singing your heart out, while watching the fans below having a great time -- especially if a lot of them are of the opposite sex!

Yes, starting a rock band can be a lot of fun AND it can be profitable, if you follow a few easy steps while getting started.

1. The first part is getting together a group of like-minded people who want to play music together. Make sure the other people have similar interests, morals and don't smell too bad. You will be spending a lot of time with them, so you should get a long well with each other or you'll be spending more time looking for replacements than you will playing music.

2. Once you have the people in place, you need to agree on a style of music to play. If you have a songwriter in the group, you'll want to play those "originals." These are songs you will own, record and sell. If no-one in the group is a songwriter, you'll be playing "covers". When starting a rock band this is how most begin. Covers are other people's music that you like on the radio or from a certain era, or genre. (80s, 90s, or Classic Rock, etc.) While you can have a lot of fun and make a good living just playing covers, the real money and "rock stardom" come from playing originals.

3. Next, you'll need to think about where you want to play. Wedding bands are mostly cover bands with a very wide variety of music styles. Since the band is not the star of the show (the bride is) they tend to be a little more subdued. If you want to play a lot of loud music with lots of stage antics, you'll be playing at clubs and theaters. Corporate gigs are great, since they can pay a lot of money, but they tend to best suited for established "show" bands, usually with a female singer or two.

4. OK, so you've got the band together, you've learned the songs, now you're ready to go right? Wrong! Now is when you get ready to cash in on all the long hours you've spent learning your instrument and rehearsing with the band. This is where the band marketing and promotions come in. Think about the marketing of your band just like you would any other aspect of it. You wouldn't go on stage without your instruments, or a sound system, right? Well don't forget the marketing either.

5. Your band name will set the tone for your image. For example, if you are a heavy metal band, you'll probably want a name more like "The Devil Demons" rather than "The Cute, Fluffy Bunnies." Make sure your band looks and acts like your name name implies and relates to the music you play.

6. Get a banner made up at any local sign shop that you can hang up behind you wherever you play. I can't tell you how many bands I have seen and have no clue who they were because they didn't have a banner.

7. Next you'll need an online Promo Kit where you can store your band photos, demo music video of you playing, contact numbers etc.

8. Your web site should have info about the band, some sample photos, music demos, videos, etc. Be sure your phone number is there where someone can easily find it. VERY IMPORTANT - Be sue you have a place where someone can sign-up to be on your mailing list.

9. Which leads us to the Auto Responder. An Auto Responder creates a form on your web site so you can capture email addresses. It then stores them for you so you can automatically send out messages, or send them out whenever you want. This way your fans will know when and where you are playing. You can also send them notices of new music and merchandise you have for sale.

10. Be sure whenever/wherever you play that you have someone with a sign-up sheet getting people's email addresses. You will then enter them into your mailing list. I can't stress enough how important it is that you create this fan base. This list of people will be who you market your shows and recorded music to for a long as you want to make money with your music. Every show you do without getting these emails could be the difference between you becoming a hugely successful, professional musician, or just having a fun hobby.

The difference between supporting yourself as a musician or having to live off macaroni and cheese is simply having the information you need, and then acting on it. As much as New York is a great place to enjoy music, it is also a great place to learn music. There are a number of music schools in NYC, including some of the most prestigious in the world. With all the great schools and the endless opportunities, music students should want to be nowhere else.

For a less formal music education, spend a day at one of the Big Apple's many museums that feature musical displays. There is the Museum of Television and Radio and the Dia Center for the Arts to name a few.

A completely different way to celebrate music in NYC is to visit the John Lennon Memorial in Central Park. This memorial, known as Strawberry Fields, is 2.5 acres landscaped in memory of John Lennon. The memorial is a mosaic with the word, "Imagine" in the middle and a peace sign made of flowers. It is located on Central Park West at West 72nd Street directly across from where John Lennon lived and was murdered.

Is copying Apple iPod downloads to your iPod illegal?

The simple answer is no.

The only thing that is illegal is taking copyrighted material that you haven't acquired legitimately - and, of course, distributing copyrighted material that you have acquired legitimately.

You are well within your rights to copy your own music collection onto your computer or your iPod, as long as you don't then copy those files onto your friends computer or iPod.

As for music on the internet there are numerous legal options, including online services that sell individual tracks to download and keep, others offer unlimited access to a music archive in return for either a monthly fee or a one off membership fee,

There are also plenty of Apple iPod downloads that are both legal and free, these include one-off promotions from the major labels, as well as songs from little known musicians or upcoming bands who are more interested in exposure and making a name for themselves than making a profit.

As we've already seen there is nothing the record industry fears more (for obvious reasons) than the uncontrolled distribution of its copyrighted material.

It is difficult (impossible?) to see how the record companies can stop people sharing files they have copied from their own CD's even if the manage to legally kill off the underground file sharing networks.

The major labels do however have a strategy for stopping people freely distributing tracks they have legally purchased.

Its called Digital Rights Management or DRM, it involves embedding special pieces of code into music files (or Apple iPod downloads or other formats for that matter) which digitally impose certain restrictions on what you can do with that file.

Playing guitar should be fun, and learning to play the acoustic guitar is a good way to start. Acoustic is bit more difficult to learn than electric, but to begin learning acoustic all you need is a guitar and a pick, or plectrum, so most people start with acoustic, and then go on to electric if that is what they want.

However, there are some things you should know before you start, and this applies to any type of guitar playing, not only acoustic. Some of these might sound designed to put you off playing, but they are not intended that way and are things that every player should know and come to understand in time.

The first is that if you are the kind of person that starts something and then loses interest or gets bored and tends to go onto something else, then guitar playing is not for you. It requires dedication and long hours of practice, and unless you are committed to it then you are likely better trying something other than guitar. In order to be any kind of guitar player you should be prepared to set aside at least an hour a day for guitar practice, and never deviate from that. Sometimes you might not feel like it, but keep it up or you will never make it. Learning to play the acoustic guitar involves a lot of practice, and practice is the main way to become a decent player.

Be prepared for pain. Guitar strings cut into your fingers and it will hurt at the start. Every good guitar player has to go through this, but eventually you will develop calluses on your fingertips and you will suddenly find guitar playing comfortable and fun. You should also strengthen your grip so that you will find it easier to hold the guitar. When you start playing you will be using muscles in your hands that you hardly used that way before, and that too will hurt at first. The stronger your fingers and your grip the better it will be for you, so take a tip and buy yourself one of these grip strengtheners or use a tennis ball to squeeze on regularly. You will soon be able to run your fingers up and down the fret without any discomfort at all.

If you are prepared to carry on having learned these facts then you are ready to start learning. If you have not bought your guitar yet, you have two choices. Either purchase a cheap one, or better still, borrow a spare one from a friend and use that until you find if you really are suited to the guitar, or just go ahead and purchase the best you can. You should buy the best possible guitar that you can afford, because with guitars you get what you pay for. However, if you aren't sure if you want to continue with it, it could be an expensive purchase, hence the cheapo to try out first.

Now pick it up and have a good look at it. Get to know the function of each part of it. Understand the purpose of the soundbox, check out the strings and how they are constructed. Find out how the notes change as you go up and down the frets. Try out two or three different types of plectrum, or pick. Not the difference between a soft and a hard pick, and try to determine which gives a sound closest to the one you like best.

Once you understand how your instrument is constructed, and how it makes the sounds that it does, then that is just about all you need know before you start learning to play the acoustic guitar. One thing that has not been mentioned: music. We can all get so engrossed in the instrument itself that we can lose sight of what an acoustic guitar is for: to play music. That is something that you have to understand - playing the guitar might seem like a cool thing to do, especially if your buddies all have a guitar, but if you are not really interested in music much then there is not much point in you starting lessons.

By music I don't mean listening to the latest chart stuff, but real music. The music that you read and play, and the type of music that inspires you. It takes a musical inclination to play it rather than just listen to it, and that is why the vast majority of people who buy a guitar never actually get far with it. They think it a cool thing to do, but aren't really interested in music other than the latest by Leona Lewis or Ray J.

So there you are: the things you should know before learning to play acoustic guitar. If you still want to learn after reading that then you likely have what it takes to become a good player. The key is practice, and if you practice enough then you will eventually get where you want to be.
