Giving Your Child an Edge

Today's parents are not the same parents of twenty years ago. It was the extreme parent who hired a tutor when their child was earning A's and B's or who hired the personal sports trainer when their child was the star pitcher. Today, it is the extreme parent who does not do these things for their child. Parents want their children to be the best, not just to do their best.

In order to ensure their child's success, parents are always on the look out for programs that will give their child the extra edge to win the prize position, the lead role, admission to the best school, and scholarships. Academic, sports, theater, art, and music programs are available for children as young as 6 months old and offer the head start that parents are looking for.

Many parents are turning to music for results. Scientific studies link higher test scores, improved coordination, concentration levels, and study discipline to learning music at a young age. Other benefits include improved language, social, and memory skills. These benefits are realized when children become involved with music at a young age and continue for a regular and sustained period of time. Mathematics is particularly linked to music study. There are many similarities between music and mathematics including patterns, fractions, and graphing.

The popularity of music programs are increasing. Private music schools are more prevalent, self-teaching keyboards and guitars are available, and schools are offering band lessons for younger grades. Even video game manufacturers are trying to make their video games more appealing to parents by adding musical games and accessories.

The good news is that giving your child a head start doesn't have to be intense or costly. Singing to and with your child has marked benefits in addition to bonding. Clapping and banging a drum teaches basic rhythms and boosts confidence. Allowing young children to explore with an instrument for fun can easily translate into a love of music and a life-long interest.

Jesse Fisher enjoys writing articles for Allegro Rainbow- a business created to help people learn how to play musical instruments. I Can Play Guitar helps children learn to play the guitar in a fun and interesting way.

Music Review of Achillea - The Nine Worlds

In all the years I've been reviewing music (13 and counting) one of my favorite labels has always been Sequoia Records. David and Steve Gordon have consistently released a plethora of cool music, their own (including the bestselling Sacred Drum series of Native/World music) and that of numerous other artists, with dozens of titles available. In fact, the first CD I ever received and reviewed, Music of the Tarot , came from Sequoia. As if their music wasn't enough, the Gordon's have a strong "green" ecology ethic, and it feels really fabulous to support what they do.

Having said that, I must add that the Gordon's have recently stepped up their game. As evidence, I present Achillea: The Nine Worlds, by Jens Gad, a core member of Enigma, one of my very favorite groups of the past fifteen years. Those acquainted with Enigma's music will instantly find Gad's sound deliciously familiar. A master of the guitar as well as a studio wizard, Gad's Achillea: The Nine Worlds is gorgeous, sensuous, hypnotic, juicy and full of delightful surprises.

Signature dance rhythms, wicked bass and awesome synthesizers create an awesome accompaniment to Gad's guitar. The most brilliant facet of all is the classical vocals of Helene Horlyck. Gad weaves all of these musical elements into Achillea, The Nine Worlds, a worthy addition to the library of Enigima fans, or anyone who appreciates world-beat dance grooves and musical adventures of the spirit. Free sound samples are available on Sequoia's website. Check out the whole catalog, they have much to offer the discerning listener.

Polyphonic Ringtones: Calls, Court Cases, and Copyrights

Ringtones are big business. The Yankee Group announced that over the last five years, these musical tones have sent people literally singing to the bank, with a total revenue of $2 billion since 2001, and $50 million in one year alone.

The figures show how popular ringtones have become among cell phone users, who download the files to personalize their caller functions. They can pick from millions of songs, from the latest hit R&B single, to quirky sounds like cows mooing, to the classical pieces of Ludwig van Beethoven. Technological development has also made the audio quality of the ringtones much more realistic. From the ear-piercing, tin-like sounds of the first downloadable tunes, todays music pieces have a near-radio quality. You could dance to it, except youd look pretty silly shaking your booty while taking a call.

Unfortunately, the realistic quality of the musical pieces have raised a few ethical issues, namely violation of copyright. Since the sound of the ringtones and the sound of the actual songs are so close, record companies are saying that they count as reproductionsand because of that, they should pay some kind of royalty to the labels and the singers.

In a celebrated case, rap artist Eminem filed injunctions against five ringtone companies, supposedly because they had used his songs without his prior consent.

Some would argue that the ringtones only use ten seconds, maximum, of the actual song. How long should a snippet be before it becomes copyright infringement? Nokia representative Matthew Courtney believes that it has nothing to do with length. "Every reproduction of a musical excerpt involves payment of copyright fees to the copyright owner," he says.

There are some songs that fall beyond this rule, such as those that fall into public domain: classical pieces, national anthems, and yes, a cow mooing. (To date, there are no records of cows suing any major ringtone company.) Others still require the permission of the artists, and may even be subject to royalty fees.

Luckily most artists are not that inclined to sue, seeing the ringtones as a way of promoting their music, and perhaps a compliment to their own popularity. In a way, being immortalized in a ringtone has become a gauge of how ones music has infiltrated public consciousness. Besides, nobody actually downloads a ringtone as a replacement for an actual record. A real fan would want more than a ten second recording out of a three minute song, although would probably use that snippet to announce to the world, Hey, this tune rocks.

However, trends do indicate that fans may actually be willing to pay for their polyphonic ringtones. Music label EMI representative Jay Samit estimates that the earnings form ringtones could contribute as much as 10% of the record industrys total revenues. Apparently, the appeal of ringtones is that strong people arent just downloading it because its free, but because its a valued feature.

Of course, many polyphonic ringtones still allow people to download the tunes for free, generating their revenue from ads instead. Others use a mixture of the two business models, offering some for free (or a weekly rotating list) while requiring a small download fee for premium ringtones.

Either way, lawsuits notwithstanding, the fact is that ringtones are here to stay.

Polyphonics.eu.com provides fully licensed polyphonic ringtones as well as all the latest real tones.

Trash TV's Secret Story

You can tell summer has arrived here in France because the signs are all around us.

First up there are the obvious ones - such as the weather and the dress code. Of course the latter, especially in the nation's capital, can still turn into something of a catwalk as this year's chic hits the streets big time in what for many is the Mecca of the fashion world.

Then there are the music festivals, concerts, outdoor productions, and jumble sales held up and down the country and let's not forget the smell of a BBQ wafting in from the neighbour's garden.

Prime time television news reports begin focusing on the queues at airports and the number of passengers passing through the French capital's major railway stations, rather than hard news. And national newspapers go in for the inevitable silly season.

The inside lanes of the motorways are bumper-to-bumper full of Dutch cars, trailers and caravans, busting at the seams with provisions for a month.

In August of course, when (hopefully) summer will be in full swing a huge chunk of the country will all but close down for a month and Paris will put up shop almost completely as the French head south literally and metaphorically with "Aoutien" holidaymakers replacing "Juilletistes".

But the real clue that the whole shebang is underway has to be the reappearance on the small screen of Secret Story.

It reared its less than attractive head on Friday evening on the country's number one national channel, TF1, and is set to be in everyone's sitting rooms for the next 10 weeks.

In essence it's France's answer to Big Brother - only more downmarket. Impossible you might think, but sadly true.

Basically the idea is very simple. It starts with 15 people, strangers to each other - with the odd exception, as will become clearer later on - moving into a built-for-TV house, where they'll be under the watchful eye of the production team and the viewing public 24/7 (via the Internet of course) for two and a half months.

Each carries with them into the house a "secret" - and the idea is to keep it hidden from the others for as long as possible while trying to cajole out of fellow house mates exactly what they're trying to keep under wraps.

Off camera there is also the deep bass booming tones of The Voice (La Voix), dropping hints whenever he feels like it, setting playful if somewhat idiotic tasks with cash rewards should they be completed successfully without anyone else in the house realising.

Every week two candidates are nominated and television viewers get to vote in a 'phone poll (at premium rates of course) on who should stay in. Original stuff huh?

Yes the country which so often likes to think that it has taken the cultural highroad, brought the world classics in the fields of literature, art and music, prides itself on its language and traditions, cuisine, fine wines and haute couture - now proves once again that it can mix it with the best and worst of what the world of reality TV has to offer.

The new series, which kicked off on Friday evening will have a hard act to follow.

Last summer, when TF1 first ran the programme, the eventual winner quickly had her secret revealed .She was a triplet - and after the other house members wheedled it out of her, in tramped her two sisters.

Thus the three of them provided viewers with hours of entertainment as they played cards, ate, played cards and slept, eventually being crowned the winners because.... well because they were pretty inoffensive and bland.

Up against them was the nudist, the escort boy, the son of a famous French tennis player (Henri Leconte) a transsexual and an obnoxious couple (their secret) who bickered and manipulated their way to the final, earning their Warhol moment of fame and then (thankfully) disappearing into oblivion.

This year's dollop of dubious "culture" kicked off with the contestants tastefully arriving at the house one by one in his and hers blue and pink limos. Each woman seemingly more buxom than the last, many of them sporting micro dresses of which even pop diva Mariah Carey would have been envious.

And with a few exceptions each man was more muscled, more coiffed and more drop-dead gorgeous than the last, preening and pouting as though they were models in Milan.

Separately they tottered, strutted, swaggered or tripped their way through the jeering and cheering masses into 10-weeks-worth (for the eventual winner) of fleeting public notoriety and a stab at the chance of picking up a 150,000 cheque at the end.

Some of the contestants have had their secrets revealed to the public already - such as the lesbian couple from Belgium, the black mother and white daughter or the 30-something hunk and teenage siren who have to pretend to be "a couple". But none of the other housemates (apart from those "in" on their own coupled secrets) is any the wiser yet.

Nor do any of the contestants know exactly what secrets they have to find out, although once again viewers have been told that among the 15 there is an Anglican minister (male of female not revealed), an undertaker, a medium (who you would think might just have a head start on the others and know whether he or she would end up winning), a prince or princess and a Don Juan with apparently more than 750 "conquests" under his belt already.

So as the 15 pretenders to the title of French telly's newest reality TV hero or heroine are busy settling in to their 24/7 life together transmitted live on the Net and daily on the small screen, we can probably expect some tasteless antics similar to last year's offering - such as the rump steak shoved down the underpants of one male contestant.

There'll also doubtless be the same sort of petty rivalries, squabbles and handbags-at-dawn stuff that characterised much of the first series.

But breathe a sigh of relief because at least it's all being done in the name of entertainment. And as much as some might question why and find it "outrageous", there'll probably still be millions tuning in.

Let's also not forget there's always the "off" button on the TV set or alternative viewing on other channels.

As compulsive and trashy as Secret Story might be it'll still more than likely pull in the viewers and become its own story in itself as the nation tut-tuts and hisses in disapproval and indignation at the antics of the previous night's revelations.

Oh well. In the indomitable words of La Voix "C'est tout pour le moment."

Languages - Why Learn Spanish?

If you have decided to learn a foreign language, why should you choose Spanish? There are plenty of good reasons for learning the Spanish language, not least of all because it is relatively easy for English speakers.

Many words in Spanish have the same origins as their English counterparts and in fact over two thousand words are more or less the same, with just slight variations in spelling. In fact, there are a few rules and once you've learned those, you will immediately have a vocabulary of over two thousand words in Spanish, which is impressive.

Word order in Spanish also tends to be similar to English word order and this makes it much easier to understand complete sentences and to build them yourself, both in written and spoken Spanish.

Spanish spelling is pretty straightforward and once you've learned pronunciation, most words are written the way they sound. This is much easier than English spelling, which is complex and doesn't seem to be at all logical!

Spanish pronunciation is relatively easy for English speakers and is especially easy for people from Ireland and Scotland. Grammar is easier than French grammar and so should not cause too many problems if you've already studied French.

Spanish is also one of the major world languages as it is spoken in many countries of Latin America and so is important in the business world. If you are looking for an international career, Spanish is one of the best languages you could learn. Fortunately, the differences between the Spanish spoken in Latin America and that spoken in Spain are not so great that they will cause many problems.

Spain has become a popular destination for British people, not only for holidays but also as a place in which they can retire or set up a business and enjoy the good weather and the advantages of the EU. So, anyone from the UK wanting to live and work abroad can enjoy a warm climate without moving too far from home. If you do plan to work in Spain, it is important to learn the language and there are plenty of classes on offer in the UK.

In the US, Spanish is widely spoken, making it the obvious choice as a second language and the proximity of Latin America offers a wide range of opportunity for both taking vacations and working abroad. Entrepreneurs can also target Latin America with their products and services.

So, Spanish is an excellent choice if you want to learn another language. Discover the best way to learn Spanish by visiting my website.

Lara Fabian, The True Personification of Live Performances

If you haven't seen Lara Fabian perform live, you are missing a lot. Blessed with a beautiful voice and exceptional songwriting ability makes Lara a joy to listen to. But her talents are not restricted to the ear only. It is a true joy to watch her perform live on stage. One of the biggest reasons why her live shows are such a success is due to the fact that she makes the audience part of the show. Many artists consume all the attention during a live show and leave no participation to the audience. Shows like these are one-way shows, you sit back listen and watch and go home. With Lara Fabian it's different, you feel like you are part of the stage performance. It is not strange when the crowd almost completely sings Je T'aime when Lara performs that specific song. This was seen during her Nue tour and you will almost get this phenomenon during any live performance when she sings Je T'aime. The best of all is the fact that Lara doesn't mind to give the spotlight once in a while to the crowd.

Her live shows are a whole mix of all sorts of entertainment. She adds a bit of humor in between songs by telling a joke or two or by making a witty comment. She is an extremely good dancer and her dance moves on stage really adds some special flavor to her shows. Her energetic approach is very contagious and this was seen during her PBS special, From Lara With Love. Young and old jumping was jumping for joy when she performed I Will Love Again. Her Pure and Nue concerts were both very energetic shows. The tone of her En Toute Intimit concert was much like her 9-album, sedated and calm, but still it had the elements of humor and pure musical excellence.

Musical excellence is the other element that makes her shows so special. Exceptional talented musicians, compliment her music on each and every show. Crowds fell in love with the band used during the Baden Baden, From Lara With Love and Nue concerts. But the ones that really stand out are the pianist Pierre Grimard, bass guitarist, Rmy Malo and the guitarist, Rejean Lachance, the background vocalist, Kim Richardson and the percussionist and background vocalist, Dorian Sherwood. They are part of the total recipe that makes Lara's shows so great to watch. Lara gives each and every musician on stage the chance to be in the spotlight, even though she's the main attraction of the show. It is this humble approach by every artist on stage, including Lara, which brings out the true talent of the other artists. You never get the sense that they are competing against each other, or try to steal the spotlight, they always act in perfect harmony, as a team.

Lara is known for altering the style and tone of her songs on her live shows. I Will Love Again have a distinct pop style, but Lara performed a ballad version of the song during her PBS special. During her Nue tour she performed Humana in a tropical tone, while it has an African tone on her Pure-album. She performed Tout in a bossa nova style during her 9-concert and one of the highlights of her Pure-concert was the Soul/Rap style performance of Rveille-Toi Brother. It is illustrative of Lara's talent to take a song and make something special of it, something out of the ordinary, even if it is her own music.

One must not forget to give credit to the director of most of Lara's shows, Rick Allison. He perfected most of Lara's ideas into very successful performances. Teamwork, determination, vibrant ideas, exceptional musical talent, charisma, and having a true passion for music, the ingredients for a super live performance. If you mix them right, you will please the fans and have them beg for more. Lara Fabian gets the mix right every time and that is why she is one of the best live performers of our time.

Coenraad de Beer is a huge fan of Lara Fabian. Visit the Lara Full Of Grace Forum for interesting views and discussions about Lara Fabian and her music.

Choosing the Right Entertainment

It never ceases to amaze me how little real credit is given to musicians and the music they create in a world that would be VERY different without it indeed!

Can you imagine the lack of suspense in even the greatest thriller movie without some chilling music creating the tension? How dull the atmosphere would be in a Saturday night town centre bar without music! Many TV & radio adverts just wouldn't work without music. Are you starting to get my drift?

The truth is that without realizing it music is an extremely important part of most peoples' lives and as such needs to be given great consideration when choosing a band for an important event like a Wedding, corporate event, function or the like. Having some form of musical entertainment is almost a must to ensure a great atmosphere, but just as important is which form!

As a professional musician myself, I have vast experience in many types of ensembles, from acoustic Jazz, folk & country though to electric blues, rock, funk and pop. All these genres have their place and some of the more obscure or specialist styles are the ones a musician will enjoy the most. However when choosing entertainment for a wedding, corporate event or party usually 'music lover' genres like blues, country, jazz etc. are completely the wrong choice! "Why?", you might ask.

Well the majority of the general public aren't what I'd call 'music lovers'. Many people can't hear a guitar solo on a record, they don't know what a bass is and quite frankly they don't care. They DO, however, know ALL the words to 'Come on Eileen'; they'll sing at the top of their voices to 'I Will Survive' and will ecstatically 'strut their stuff' to 'Car Wash' and 'Celebration'! Are you getting the picture? I've known bands with some of the finest musicians in their field, some which are so famous and renowned they have guitars named after them, be 'paid off' at weddings and asked not to play their last set because they were playing blues or the like. Probably the finest music you'll hear but non music lovers will simply never get it.

So if music's so important at an event, but great music in the 'music lover' sense is the wrong choice, how does one find a band that is made up of professional highly skilled musicians, yet plays out and out dance floor-filling classic pop tunes? Surely this is a contradiction in terms almost?! Well it's not - in fact there are many bands doing just that at an extremely professional level these days, usually made up of some of the UK's top session musicians too! One example of this kind of band is the function band 'Boogie Express'. Boogie Express is made up of only fully professional musicians who've played on lots of records, CD's and so on and have all worked with some of the biggest names in the business! What bands like this have done is to channel all their years of experience in both the music business and in show business into creating an 'ultimate' party band experience.

There are many bands similar to Boogie Express out there, and if you search Google and the like with terms like 'function band' you should find many more.

I do hope you find this article helpful in understanding the best way to incorporate great music and entertainment into an event and wish you all the best - what ever your musical tastes!
