Can you talk to people without first memorizing what to say? Probably you can. Can you create melodies and nice licks to chords on the spot. Many pianists find this harder. Let's try out a few ways to improve your improvisations!

Put something in to get something out

Piano improvisation is a form of composing. In other words you are creating music.

In order to improvise in an intelligent manner and not only play random notes you have to listen to improvised music and practise on your piano in a manner that will help you create music when you improvise.

There are many ways to practise improvisation but let's start with playing a few licks over the II-V-I progression in the key of C.

In this exercise you will improvise melodic patterns with your right hand and play chords with you left.

The note C4 is the middle C on the piano and D4 is the D to the right of this C. B3 is the B note to the left of C4.

We will start with the Dm chord in the left hand. Dm is the II chord in C. We will play it in its basic form:

Dm: D3 F3 A3

With the right hand it's time to play patterns that fit this chord. For example:

F4 A4 C5 E5 D5 C5 A4 F4

We will now play the V chord which will come next in the II-V-I progression. In C-major this will be G. It can be played as follows:

G: B2 D3 G3

An continuation of the melodic flow in Dm could be:

E4 F4 A4 C5

We will now end on the I chord which will be C in the key of C-major. In it's basic form it looks like this:

C: C3 E3 G3

We will end the melody by playing the note B4. This makes the whole ending to a Cmaj7 chords. Sounds nice, doesn't it!

We will continue this piano improvisation lesson by trying out a few more possibilities with the same piano chord progression for your right hand improvisations:

Piano progression 1

Dm: E5 C5 A4 F4

G: D#5 B4 G#4 F4

C: D5

Piano progression 2

Dm: F4 A4 C5 E5

G: F4 G#4 B4 E5

C: D5

Piano progression unlimited

Of course there are unlimited possibilities so now it is time to jump into the unknown by experimenting and inventing melodies with your right hand as you play the progressions in the left hand.

What do you learn by practicing piano progressions?

You learn patterns that you can use in different contexts as you improvise. You learn different chords that can be implemented in your piano playing.

Most importantly, you learn to improvise. Improvisation is a bit of memorized fragments and a lot of just jumping into the unknown and do something about it.

The end result is hopefully a bit of music to the benefit of the people in the world.

Don't Panic

Over the weekend, I drifted to my nearest local EZY video shop. While waiting to be served, I drifted to the comedy, musicals, and the crime sections. It was the musicals that greatly attracted my interest. Ive always loved musicals, something amiss nowadays, replaced by films with much violence, sexual overtones, political, science fiction and other action-packed Hollywood offerings. Slowly, my thoughts lingered to refreshing movies with music The Sound of Music, Carousel, South Pacific, Camelot, My Fair Lady, and Mary Poppins among others. Yes, I particularly mean movie musicals!

Soon enough my memories wafted to the greatest musical collaboration of all time, that of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, the most successful legendary songwriting team in musical theatre history. Rodgers wrote the music, and Hammerstein wrote the lyrics. Most of the stage musicals of Rodgers and Hammerstein were made into movies, also with phenomenal success, in particular, The Sound of Music.

At 16, Richard Rodgers (1902-1979) initially wrote a number of successful songs with Lorenz Hart, a partnership that lasted for over twenty years. Hart died in 1943. The same year Rodgers and Hammerstein (1895-1960) teamed up and started their first musical collaboration with Oklahoma! based on a play called Green Grow the Lilacs by Lynn Riggs. Oklahoma! is very different from most musicals written up to that time where they were mainly songs and comedy, with little plot. Usually, the songs had little to do with the story. Oklahoma! has a plot. The songs either help move the plot along or help the audience understand the characters. The story is partly fun, and has a serious side too. This is because Rodgerss background was mostly in the old-style, "fun" musicals, while Hammersteins background was in opera and operettamore "serious" types of music. When Rodgers worked with Hart, he wrote the music first, and then Hart wrote the lyrics. But in this new team, Hammerstein wrote the lyrics first and Rodgers created the music to fit.

Audiences loved Oklahoma!. It played on Broadway for 2,248 performances, breaking all Broadway box office records for shows until that time. It also won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1944, which changed the face of stage musicals an emotional story told through music, dance and lyrics as never before. After Oklahoma! Rodgers and Hammerstein went on to create Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I and The Sound of Music. The impact on these shows for Broadway and amateur stage, both in terms of popular appeal and their influence on other writers, was overwhelming.

Carousel, the duos next big hit in 1945, had an even more dramatic plot than Oklahoma!. Instead of the usual overture before the show begins, the show opens with the whole cast performing a ballet as the orchestra plays.

South Pacific, written in 1949, and based on Tales from the South Pacific by novelist James A. Michener, is set during World War II. It has the most serious plot of any Rodgers and Hammerstein show because it confronts both war and racism. South Pacific also won the Pulitzer Prize.

The King and I is about conflicts between cultures. It is based on a true story about Anna Leonowens, a British governess who went to Siam (now Thailand) to teach the kings children. Anna finds life in Siam very different from what she is accustomed to, but she and the king come to like each other despite their differences.

Rodgers and Hammersteins final collaboration was The Sound of Music, in 1959. It is also based on a true story, about a young novice nun who becomes the governess for seven children of a widower, Captain Von Trapp. This musical also has a serious sideit is set in the days of Nazi Germany, and the Von Trapp familys freedom is at stake. The beautiful song "Edelweiss" from The Sound of Music was the last song Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote together. Hammerstein died of cancer on August 23, 1960. After Hammerstein's death, Rodgers wrote other shows with other lyricists, including Stephen Sondheim, but none reached the heights of his work with Hammerstein.

For always, I will relish the most beautiful and poignant legacy of their partnership. How can I forget such immortal, refreshing, and most wonderful hit songs on stage and film history as these:

Oklahoma! - "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'," "People Will Say We're in Love," "Many a New Day," "I Can't Say No," and the final rousing chorus of "Oklahoma!" itself.

Carousel "Youll Never Walk alone" and "If I loved You."

South Pacific "There is Nothin' Like a Dame," "This Nearly was Mine," "Younger Than Springtime" and "Some Enchanted Evening."

The King and I "Getting to Know You," "I Whistle a Happy Tune," "Something Wonderful" and "Hello, Young Lovers."

The Sound of Music "Edelweiss," "My Favorite Things", "Climb Ev'ry Mountain," "The Lonely Goatherd", as well as the title song.

Who knows, we might yet have another Rodgers and Hammerstein in the making, an anodyne to all these turbulence and disarray in our world today. As I write this, nearby, my sound system is playing Carousel, softly beckoning me to join in. That I never cease listening to their music and at times singing their songs is a privilege. Im at it now, " how I loved you if I loved you."

What If

Includes exclusive Tom Lord Alge mix.

The origin of the word "art" can be traced back to the old English "thou art" which means "you are". Again, art as in "fine arts" owes its root to the Latin "ars" or "artis". However, in comparison to the dual meanings in which we may express the word, the second meaning has remained unchanged with the process of time. The word "culture" however originated from the Latin language. It said to have a Latin base "colere" which means to inhabit, to cultivate, or to honor. Broadly it can be said to be a human activity carrying several meanings and definitions.

The two distinct words "art and culture" if linked with each other, it exhibits two distinct concepts
  • Art may be a product of the extensive culture (cultivation) of human sentiments.

  • Culture of different strata of society at different places at different time has been expressed in art.
  • Art can be said to be a "result" of extensive culture of human emotions, sentiment and thought of an artist, supplemented with the artist's skill. It is a product of an artist's cultivation of different strata of society at various moments. Thus if one can culture on society at different situation, he can generate a good piece of art .So we may say that "art is a reflection of society" at different time.

Practically time being the dictator in the evolution of society; it also influences a product of art. The classical period was a period of reason, order and rules.
Art has thereby exhibited such meanings at that time.

The Romantic period being a period of reasoning, so the dominant subject of art was emotion, adventure and imagination. Art in its cultural form gained impetus during the renaissance. Again, the 19th century culture was the theory of truth and beauty thus the form of art that came up during this period was based on "truth" and "beauty".

Early 20th century culture brought forth the concept of modernism -this is the time, when the human nature was undergoing turmoil. The bizarre mundane society was undergoing a deviation from humanity at this time. The late 20th century is the postmodern period The puzzled society is now trapped in such a ditch that an exit from this phase is next to impossible. Men are said to have been transformed into robots. Junked up with work pressure they have little or no time to cherish their emotions and sentiments .The work of art that comes up at this stage are to call up an attention to human sentiment and art at large. The overall disjointed sentiment when cultured by an artist; it is reflected in the works of art through abstract expressions, images, ideas and concepts.

Besides, a piece of art may also echo a specific culture. We may find several piece of art vividly exposing the "Byzantine culture". Again a work of art might focus on "Iranian culture", "western culture" or "modern culture" and so on. Moreover the art of working in a particular place at a particular time is the work culture. Likewise we have club culture or organizational culture.

Actually art in its own form has developed itself with its multicultural heritage over time. Thus, it is worth saying that both art and culture are complimentary to each other and an overall support to each other to attain some sort of fulfillment at large.

Ok, you want to buy a digital piano. You have visited lots of music shops and tried lots of digital pianos out. You have been given lots of conflicting advice and dont know what to do!

This is sadly what many shoppers experience when they want to buy a digital piano and they go to their
local piano shop armed with a few print outs from the internet but not enough knowledge or the right advice to make an informed decision.

    Go Shopping for digital pianos

You enter your local piano shop and are confronted with lots of digital pianos, different styles, colours, shapes. Some digital pianos have a few buttons, some hundreds of buttons and flashing lights HELP!!!
You want some advice but unfortunately the advice you will get from the salesman will always favour the shops profit over yourself.

You visit one piano shop and they recommend the Roland digital piano it is the best digital piano around by far, amazing sounds and it plays and feels just like a real piano they say.
You say What about the Yamaha, I have heard that it is a very good piano as well?
They say No, the Roland digital piano is far better than the Yamaha. They then sit down and play
the Yamaha and then the Roland and convince you that the Roland digital piano is definitely far better than the Yamaha.
Why do piano shops always try to push a particular model or a particular brand?
Well the reason behind this is that they are either eager to get rid of a model or they are
simply making more money on one brand than they are the other.

You trot off to another piano shop to get some more advice and to compare prices. Again you walk in
and you are confronted by a similar set up. The salesman, like before, shows you the different digital pianos
and advises you that the Casio is the best digital piano and not the Yamaha, and certainly not the Roland. The Roland digital piano is way over priced!
You explain that you have just been to another piano shop and were told that the Roland digital piano is better than the Yamaha, and the Casio is nowhere near as good. They dont know what they are talking about the salesman says. Now you are utterly confused and walk out of the shop a little angry.

If you have experienced the above and are at the end of your tether, I am here to help and offer you unbiased advice on which digital piano you should consider, the merits of each one and the strengths and weaknesses. Read on

    Yamaha digital pianos

The Yamaha digital piano is the most popular digital piano today. More Yamahas are sold than any other digital piano by a long way.
Yamaha have got where they are today by superior branding, advertising and product development.
Yamaha put in so much effort to make their digital pianos (known as Clavinova) sound and feel as close to a real piano as possible, the sound sample they use for their digital pianos is taken from their own concert grand piano.
    Rating: 9 out of 10.

Advice: Go ahead and buy any Yamaha digital piano from the range.

Price: Basic models start from RRP 989. You should be able to buy a Yamaha digital piano on the web for about 20% off.

    Casio digital pianos

The Casio digital piano has improved vastly over the previous few years. The Casio digital pianos were considered mediocre a few years ago, but now their improvements have been so great they are considered to be one of the best digital pianos on the market today.
Casio digital pianos are, and have always been, the best value for money. The Casio digital pianos are not quite as good as the Roland or the Yamaha but they are generally cheap digital pianos, between half and two thirds the price of the Yamaha and Roland digital pianos.

    Rating: 7 out of 10.

Advice: Fantastic value for money! Go ahead and buy any Casio digital piano from the Celviano range (Casio AP). You might want to consider the Casio Privia digital piano range if you are short of space.

Price: Basic models start from RRP 799.99. You should be able to find some great deals on the web.
Casio digital pianos generally sell for around 28-30% off RRP.

    Roland digital pianos

The Roland digital piano is built with quality and produces nice piano tones, especially around the centre of the keyboard. The sound is a little thin and false around the middle to high treble though.
Roland has always been known to value their brand extremely highly and will not reduce their prices if it means the quality of their digital pianos would be compromised.
The sound sampling for the Roland digital piano is taken from a Steinway concert grand piano.

    Rating: 8 out of 10.

Advice: Go ahead and buy any Roland digital piano from the HP, F or KR range.

Price: Basic modesl start from RRP 899. Prices seem to be fixed on the internet so you wont be able to get much more than 5% off RRP. You will probably get a better deal on a Roland digital piano from your local music shop.

    Korg digital pianos

Korg are perhaps better known for their high end keyboards and stage pianos. They do produce a limited range of digital pianos that offer functions similar to the Casio digital piano.
Korg digital pianos are quite reasonably priced but their performance falls short of the Yamaha, Roland and Casio digital pianos.

    Rating: 4 out of 10.

Advice: Wouldnt really consider a Korg digital piano, but some people like their sound.

Price: Basic models start from RRP 999. You should be able to buy a Korg digital piano on the web at around 30-35% off.

    Kawai digital pianos

Hugely hyped up digital pianos! Kawai proclaim to have produced the perfect piano action and piano sound by some wizardry potion that no other company can obtain complete hogwash!
I have tried and tested these digital pianos out and find that the keys are too light and spongy and the sound is very bright, harsh and electronic.

    Rating: 3 out of 10.

Advice: Wouldnt really consider a Kawai digital piano, unless you are fond of the Kawai piano sound.

Price: Basic model starts from RRP 999. You should be able to buy a basic Kawai digital piano on the web at around 20-25% off RRP.

    Gem digital pianos

Gem digital pianos look very nice indeed and have a great name behind them. They do lack in quality though, the sound is very poor and they offer a limited range of digital pianos. The lid tends to make a squeaking sound and the keys are quite noisy. They proclaim to use Drake Technology in their pianos sounds impressive doesnt it? But what is it? Well, It really is just a feature to help them sell, but I dont
personally see much of an improvement in their digital pianos.

    Rating: 3 out of 10.

Advice: Probably wouldnt consider a Gem digital piano, but if you like the polished ebony look, it is the cheapest digital piano in that particular colour on the market.

Price: Basic models start from RRP 999. You probably wont be able to get much of a discount on Gem digital pianos, as these pianos are not very popular and there is not much competition online.

    Ketron digital pianos

Ketron make good digital pianos but they are very expensive, especially the digital grand pianos.
If you have money to burn then consider these pianos, otherwise go for one of the big three Yamaha, Roland or Casio.

    Rating: 6 out of 10.

Advice: Probably wouldnt consider a Ketron digital piano unless I had lots of money to throw away, but if you really like the sound - some people do - then go ahead!

Price: Basic models stars from RRP 1299. You probably wont be able to get much of a discount on a Ketron digital piano, as these pianos are not very popular and there is not much competition online.

    Suzuki digital pianos

Suzuki make fantastic motorbikes, but digital pianos??
Yes Suzuki is very famous for their motorbikes but also Suzuki is hugely famous in the world
of musical instruments. They are famous for the Suzuki teaching method, they make great violins and bows, recorders, harmonicas, guitars and reasonable acoustic pianos.
Suzuki digital pianos, however, unfortunately dont quite make the grade. The Suzukis sound is poor, the build quality is appalling and the touch is rather dreadful. They are very cheap digital pianos. Sorry Suzuki, but I have to tell the truth.

    Rating: 2 out of 10.

Advice: Dont buy a Suzuki digital piano. Pease dont buy a Suzuki digital piano. Never buy a Suzuki digital piano! There are so many other good digital pianos out there, why would you want to throw your money away buying a Suzuki digital piano?

Price: Basic model starts from RRP 799. You can pick up generous discounts on Suzuki digital pianos (20-25%). Beware of your local piano shop if they are trying to sell you a Suzuki digital piano. Ask them how it compares to a Yamaha digital piano or a Roland.

    Kurzweil digital pianos

Kurzweil are well known for their keyboards and pro audio products but not so much for their digital pianos. Kurzweil digital pianos have been around for a long time, they have been mainly distributed in America up until recently. The Kurzweil digital piano is very robust and produces a good sound.

    Rating: 5 out of 10.

Advice: Might be worth trying one out if you can find a Kurzweil digital piano stockist. I have seen of these pianos on Ebay.

Price: Check Ebay, as this is probably the only place you will find them on the web.

More digital pianos (not in the same league as above)

Alesis, Bohemia, Bohm, Daewoo, Ensonio, Farfisa, Hammond, Orla, Samick, Solton, Technics, Viscount Allegro, Wersi.

These digital pianos are much worse than any of the above digital pianos I have reviewed and should definitely not be considered.

I can recommend and good website that offers comprehensive information, unbiased advice, reviews and a range of most of the digital pianos mentioned above:

Digital Pianos: Yamaha, Roland, Casio, Korg and more - Soundsmusical.com

I hope that armed with the above information you can now go out and buy a digital piano.
Dont take too much notice if you feel you are being pushed towards any particular digital piano.
Ask the piano salesman to demonstrate a few different piano brands and then make the decision yourself
based on the above information and what you feel is right for your needs.

Best of luck and I hope you enjoy your new digital piano!

Lost my 1st...Not sure how! They just keep getting better and better in my opinion. If you like this one you HAVE to get Viva La Vida!
    Customer Review: Average
6/21/08 Before you read this review check out Coldplay's latest CD "Viva la Vida". It is light years ahead of this CD "X&Y". I guess I am so addicted to Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and other great bands of the 70s-80s that Coldplay falls flat on it's face for me. Or, my expectations of "almost uniformly" stellar British rock bands is unrealistic. As most people do when listening to music, one finds that you do compare the new with the old. And so, in fairness to the change in technology and my own personal taste, I compared this band to my current favorite in world rock music, the astonishing rock-your-rear-off Afro Celt Sound System Band whose singer Iarla O'Liondird's vocal range is so utterly astounding. (Even Josh Groban plays AFCSS at his live concerts). After listening four times to this CD "X&Y", I still found Chris Martin's nasal, and at times, irritatingly whiney voice boring and monotonously repetitive. He is up and down his vocal range over and over on nearly every song. About midway through the CD it felt like I was listening to the same song over and over with musical variations. For me the song lyrics were mostly juvenile and often trite. Especially on the song "X&Y". HOWEVER, Their band members' musicality and instrument talent is undeniable. For this reason I can say I somewhat enjoyed the CD. Overall, if I have to pick a listen to again, maybe, these songs merit a redux: "White Shadows"; "A Message"; "Low".

If you have decided to learn a foreign language, why should you choose Spanish? There are plenty of good reasons for learning the Spanish language, not least of all because it is relatively easy for English speakers.

Many words in Spanish have the same origins as their English counterparts and in fact over two thousand words are more or less the same, with just slight variations in spelling. In fact, there are a few rules and once you've learned those, you will immediately have a vocabulary of over two thousand words in Spanish, which is impressive.

Word order in Spanish also tends to be similar to English word order and this makes it much easier to understand complete sentences and to build them yourself, both in written and spoken Spanish.

Spanish spelling is pretty straightforward and once you've learned pronunciation, most words are written the way they sound. This is much easier than English spelling, which is complex and doesn't seem to be at all logical!

Spanish pronunciation is relatively easy for English speakers and is especially easy for people from Ireland and Scotland. Grammar is easier than French grammar and so should not cause too many problems if you've already studied French.

Spanish is also one of the major world languages as it is spoken in many countries of Latin America and so is important in the business world. If you are looking for an international career, Spanish is one of the best languages you could learn. Fortunately, the differences between the Spanish spoken in Latin America and that spoken in Spain are not so great that they will cause many problems.

Spain has become a popular destination for British people, not only for holidays but also as a place in which they can retire or set up a business and enjoy the good weather and the advantages of the EU. So, anyone from the UK wanting to live and work abroad can enjoy a warm climate without moving too far from home. If you do plan to work in Spain, it is important to learn the language and there are plenty of classes on offer in the UK.

In the US, Spanish is widely spoken, making it the obvious choice as a second language and the proximity of Latin America offers a wide range of opportunity for both taking vacations and working abroad. Entrepreneurs can also target Latin America with their products and services.

So, Spanish is an excellent choice if you want to learn another language. Discover the best way to learn Spanish by visiting my website.
