Arroz con leche: canciones y ritmos populares de América Latina Popular Songs and Rhymes From Latin America

Customer Review: Songs I grew up with...
I was very happy to have found this book...I grew up with many of these rhymes and songs and I wanted to teach them to my class. The illustrations are really nice and the translations helpful in a bilingual class.
Customer Review: Buy it! Enjoy it!
I was looking for a Latino rhyme book in Amazon.com. When I read about this book I couldn't wait to buy it. The book itself is a piece of art! The illustrations and the chosen poems for this book, creates a piece of literature, every child must enjoy.

Do you feel frustrated or unfulfilled with the songs you have written? Do you think your songs have to conform to a certain standard before they are any good? If so, what exactly are you comparing them to? You may find you have an unrealistic expectation of yourself or what you think a song is or should be.

If you are unhappy with the songs you have written or think your songs are not what they should be, examine these three songwriting tips to focus your attention on clarifying what you think you want to gain from your songs.

1. Why Do You Want To Write A Song?

What do you want to communicate? Don't dismiss this, answering this question is more important than you think. If you know why you are doing something, your path will be a lot clearer. For instance, do you see yourself performing on some late night TV rock show with the audience going wild for more, or do you want to write a romantic love song to impress your partner? Or maybe you want to perform an acoustic set down at the local bar? The answer will influence your behaviour and your writing style.

2. Write And Do What You Know.

Do you know how to put chord progressions together on the piano and improvise over the top or do you know how to link drum machines and turn tables together to a whole plethora of midi equipment to pump out the biggest, baddest beats this side of Georgia? There is no difference. Your song will have more style and impact if you can find the courage to be yourself and use those talents you have today, not in what you think you should be doing, or what your song should sound like.

3. Develop Your Habit Of Songwriting.

How are you coming up with your ideas? Repetition increases the likely hood of repetition, that means the more you do something, the more you are likely to do it. The more you get into the habit of writing down lyrics in a notebook that you carry with you at all times, the more likely you are to write down lyrics in a notebook that you carry with you at all times. Get into the habit of writing down your thoughts when your inspiration strikes because ideas always strike when you least expect them.

Your inspiration could be in the form of a lyric, a sound you heard in the street, an unusual chord change you heard on the radio or a rhythm your mum was tapping out on her coffee cup. By doing this, you can consult your own wisdom as and when you need it. These are the gems that will determine your style and show you your way forward.

Disciplining yourself to these three songwriting tips will give you confidence in yourself and your music. Realize that to write a song, you do not need to be anybody other than who you are, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Whether you are beating out a rhythm on a pair of spoons or bowing an upright punk guitar accompanied by someone tap dancing in a different time signature, songwriting is subjective. Someone somewhere will love whatever you do, someone somewhere will absolutely trash it as the most unbelievable pile of garbage to ever appear on the music scene in the history of music. The most important question you need to ask yourself at the end of the day is, do you like it?

For A Limited Time You Can Get Free Songwriting Tips To Finally Get Your Ideas Realized!

There once was a time when you would hear a song and immediately be taken in by the poetical pictures the songwriter created. The great poets and lyricists like Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, Justin Hayward, James Taylor and many others, seem to be a dying breed. Listening to music nowadays, you'd be hard-pressed to hear any artists that believe lyricism is an art form. Yes, the words usually rhyme and have a semblance of meaning, but for the most part, words are thrown together just for the SAKE of rhyming. With the explosion of internet radio and music sites and armed with an inexpensive digital recorder, anyone can upload their music, regardless of the musical ability they may or may not possess. And with all the millions of songs flooding the net, originality has taken a back seat to being seen and heard. It's as if independent music sites are nothing more than blog sites. They are certainly becoming one and the same. Anyone can have an opinion and it seems that anyone can upload their music today. Right or wrong. Good or bad.

But there is some hope! I happened upon yet another site that promotes independent/unsigned artists and much to my surprise, I found a few of artists who were not only great songwriters, but they were artists that I would call bona fide poets. The songs that really made me feel and think the most were those of Jerald Wolf. His first solo CD entitled "Winter's Emptiness" is an emotional journey of heart-felt songs that are deeply thoughtful and a well textured mix of acoustica nd electric. The first song I listened to was "You're Gone". I was immediately taken in by the descriptive words and hypnotic tune. The opening lines are:

"Last night when I called you, you were gone;
Gone back to a place you once called home.
You went trying to find the pieces of yesterday's life;
Trying to find somewhere to call your own."

From that point, I clung to every word. Jerald Wolf has a diverse and rich voice, full of emotional colors. The twelve song CD "Winter's Emptiness" is the emerging of a new songwriter/poet. The songs are as poetical as they are raw and sometimes cold. A great CD in all respects.
Other new songwriters/poets to watch for are Anne Davis with her "Temple Of Contradictions", V.K. Lynnes' "Black Halo" and Deron Wade with his CD, "Somewhere Out There". These three artists also show signs of being the next generation of the poet/songwriter. We will always have Bob Dylan and Arlo Guthrie, but it's refreshing to hear artists like Jerald Wolf, Anne Davis, V.K. Lynne and Deron Wade and to know that true talent exists outside of the major labels.

Today, anyone can give an opinion or have their music on the internet, but there are only some that desreve to be heard.

Customer Review: Menudo Mania!
I am so glad I found this DVD! I am a Menudo fan from way back but grew up in the Midwest. Not much Menudo merchandise was available so at this time in my life I am playing catch up. This DVD IS a must, must have for any Menudo fan. I would even suggest it to fans of Ricky Martin who discovered him after he left the group...especially those who discovered him after the Grammys. If you never had a chance to see this group in concert, buy this DVD! Seeing Ricky Martin at age 14 is like going down memory lane. Its amazing seeing the stage presence and star power he had at such a young age. It become obvious that he was a super star in the making and just the cutest thing on the planet! Its also interesting seeing Robby Rosa (now going by Draco Rosa, singer/songwriter/producer) back then. You could see that he was a talented artist in the making as well. Its also amazing to see how much he has changed since the 80's. This concert DVD is fun and it will put a smile on your face from begining to end!

Music of Coldplay

There is glitter and glamor, music and dancing. Maybe even your name up in lights on the marque. But at the end of your DJ party, it's time to do the real work. Which is a lead in to this article on why Disc Jockey's deserve and earn every cent they make. It's what's behind the scene that counts and a four hour job can mean many more hours of hard work and a lot less money per hour as the end result.

So many times It has been said by friends, family or future customers "That is an awful lot of money for only four hours work". Yes indeed, I am just getting rich quick for doing nothing but playing some music. It gets under your skin sometimes. If only the truth were known (and if you could get anyone to listen to you), a four hour night would be a sweet dream Indeed.

If you have been a successful DJ for awhile, I am not going to be telling you anything new. If you have considering becoming a professional DJ then I have a few things for you to ponder. If you plan on hiring a DJ please read on.

You buy some equipment to get you going, a good chunk of change, but a good DJ also has backup gear to fall back on in case of an emergency (now it's more than a few bucks). It takes a lot of 4 hour jobs to pay for it. You need to advertise, promote yourself and do a lot of legwork visiting clubs, bars and maybe a few afternoons at some wedding promotion events (you pay for a X booth). You would like to drive a nice sports car but your stuck with that 15 passenger van, not to mention that it gets 12 miles to the gallon.. Every week you jog down to the local record store and buy that much needed CD for $16.95. You know the one that only has one good song that you will ever use. But some guy just has to hear that song the next time you play (then multiply that by 50 people who want a different song). Got to please your fans. A good library of music can set you back a few hundred or thousands of dollars.

You make that appointment to meet with your clients and sign the contract. If your into beat or scratch mixing you spend a bit of time just practicing your art. The weekend comes and your out in the heat or cold (I live in New England) packing your gear in the van. With any luck it's a fairly local gig that you can drive to in about an hour, sometimes it's 3 hours both ways. You will unpack, setup, test the equipment and wait. Because if your a good DJ, then you arrive at the gig with plenty of time to spare. Time that could be used to fix a problem that might have happened but with luck did not or time to make sure your all setup before the guests start arriving. If all goes well, you have got time to wait (bring a book).

So here comes the four hour gig. You play your best music but you also put up with the people who are drunk, the people who request songs but do not know the name of the song or the artist who sang it (you must be a mind reader) and then there are the people who just want you to play some music that you know for sure would just kill the festivities (they won't listen to reason).

Finally it's pay time. Too bad the work is not over. Time to pack up, load the van, drive it home, unpack the van and get to bed. Maybe it's 4:00 in the morning and you have got another gig that night. Maybe all your friends were having a great party (wish you were here)while you was out just playing your music. If your in demand, you have not had a weekend off all year. If you have a day job then you find yourself working a seven day week. Your four hour job can end up taking up to 10 or 12 hours to do. But hey, I just got a big load of cash for only playing music for four hours. The heck with my social life. I am a DJ and I got lots of money (and deep in debt, plus van repair bills) to prove it.

DJ RON B Has over 38 years of on stage experience. A former drummer and singer in many of New England's top show bands, worked with Jerry Lewis and the MDA Labor Day Telethons, radio announcer, studio musician (worked with Miss Piggy original soundtrack, commercials etc.), host of Talent Showcases, writes music scores for submission to TAXI for TV and movie tracks, owned and ran The Bouchard Agency from 1976 to 2002. A top disc jockey for over 25 years. DJ's be sure to check out Ron Bouchard's website at http://www.djdropins.com for great DJ Drops to add to your show. Most piano teachers, if they are serious about what they do, are likely to direct students to purchase or at least be interested in an acoustic piano. However, there are many reasons why an authentic handcrafted instrument might not be your best choice. With portability, convenience, affordability and all the other features a digital piano offers, you might just want to head in the other direction. When it comes to digital versus acoustic, all it basically boils down to is just a matter of genuineness against everything else there is. This is how you can determine which will best suit you in the long run.

Acoustic piano are deficient in many features that you will find in a Digital piano, as the volume control and the convenience of porting your music to your personal computer and many others. The latest version of the Digital piano includes onboard functions such as the electronic metronome as well as mixing features. In comparison to the Acoustic piano, the making of a Digital piano involved the velocity calculating of each key, making this an array of high quality recordings possible. The aesthetic quality of the sound produced is of high quality. An Acoustic piano comprises of a multifaceted assortment of hammers, strings as well as other operational parts which function in association. This simply put, is that when any note is being played, in is not played entirely on its own, instead is affected by the surrounding mechanisms of the piano. As for example, when you play a chord on a Digital piano the outcome would be three notes being played, as though they have been recorded independently, whereas on an Acoustic piano, the three notes would act together with each other and become a stew of ambiance resulting in a more complex and more affluent reverberation. An acoustic piano has no limit of loudness or softness as to when a note is being played; digital pianos have a limited noise level that can be reached, meaning that you would not be able to play a note as loud or as soft as you wish.

Key touch is a vital issue aside from the sound. Digital pianos have been made to feel like their acoustic counterparts. The hammer on the digital has been applied to a graded hammer action, as with the line of hammers on the acoustic which slowly becomes lighter from the left to the right. The digital piano hammers are mainly an annex of the piano players' fingers. The hammers on the acoustic piano on the other hand acts as projectiles which are sprung at the springs.

The general difference in recital between a digital and an acoustic piano would be bleak. What it simmers down to, is the accuracy versus everything else, bear in mind that it is the authenticity that you would be paying for at the end of the day. Depending on your needs and in what route you would want to take your music, the decision in the end would be yours to make. Acoustic or Digital?

You can get a more in-depth knowledge about the piano in general and the many types of digital piano in particular by going to the-piano-site.com - The Complete Online Resource For Pianos And Piano Music.

Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine - Evolution

Customer Review: Lot of music for the money!
Gloria arrived on the music video scene in the mid eighties. You will see some videos from that era. What was played on MTV or VH1 was that `cat video,' "Bad Boys". Even way back then, the cat costumes and makeup are very well-done. "Dr. Beat" is a goofy, conglomeration of people in a hospital setting. There are some concert stage videos "Betcha Say That" and "Words Get In the Way." Early music videos required color and dance to attract the attention of viewers and "Rhythm is Gonna Get You" fits that category as well as "Conga" and "Get On Your Feet", and "1-2-3." A superb balladeer with a sultry voice, you will see videos "Can't Stay Away from You." Although I am not a "Gloria fan", this collection is good because it is strictly music, no interview, no extra non-music footage. I like a collection with JUST MUSIC! For the people who love Gloria, you will see the English and Spanish versions "Oye Mi Canto" "Don't Wanna Lose You", and "Anything for You" and "Here We Are." If you are new to Gloria or love Gloria's music, this a great collection. It will introduce you to her evolution in music....Mzrizz
Customer Review: A must have for any Gloria fan or pop fan.
Very good collection of her early hits with Miami Sound Machine. It covers her songs from 1984(Dr. Beat) to 1989(Here We Are). My favorite Estefan song is on this video,(Can't Stay Away From You).

The Future is Unwritten-DVD Documentary

Julien Temple, one of the early documentarians of the London punk scene and director of the 2000 Sex Pistols film The Filth and the Fury, turns his attention now to that other seminal British band: The Clash--or more accurately, to the band's co-founder, lyricist, rhythm guitarist and lead singer, Joe Strummer. The Future is Unwritten is more than just a biography of Strummer; it is a tribute and exploration of a musician, artist and devoted humanist. Though Temple respects and admires Strummer (his influence is exalted by close friends, peers and fans like Bono and John Cusack), he doesn't romanticize this larger-than-life personality and presents Strummer honestly and not always in flattering light, though the director's fondness for his subject is constant. Most movingly, Strummer himself provides the narration via reassembled excerpts from a variety of interviews and the BBC radio show he hosted during the nineties. In the wrong hands, this could be contrived, but in this masterful documentary it serves as a testament to not just Joe Strummer the myth, but Joe Strummer the man, telling us his story in vivid detail. The Future is Unwritten is a moving and personal portrait of a musician who helped shaped not just punk, but modern music as a whole. --Kira Canny
Customer Review: Amazing movie about a rock legend
There have been several movies made about Joe Strummer but Julien Temple's is unique in its personal touch. Temple was a friend of Strummer's for many years and so had insight into the man behind the music that many people did not have. The movie consists of Joe's life story as told by many friends, acquaintances, fellow artists and others who knew him or were influenced by him over the years. Amazing music, very well put-together, and just a great story about a man who was a huge influence on rock & roll and politics during his time on this earth. Joe was taken from the world too early when he died unexpectedly in December 2002 and after watching this movie one can only wonder what more he would have accomplished. The opening scene of Joe singing "White Riot" a capella in the studio is complemented by the closing scene of Joe and Mick Jones reuniting on stage 20+ years later to perform the same song...even though they were old (and Mick a little bald!) they still ROCKED. If you like the Clash, you must see this movie!!

Many years ago I asked a good friend of mine who is now a very successful professional musician, what my next step in learning was as a musician. I was so surprised with the fact that he could play anything he heard without fumbling for notes; and not only on the keyboard, but also on the bass, the guitar and several other instruments.

He told me that the most important thing a musician should learn is HARMONY. Now, I fully understand why:

When you study harmony, you are not only studying guitar, but all instruments at the same time. Harmony is notes and chords in their context. You start to understand the relationship between note intervals and scales, scales and chords. You know what will work effectively in a musical situation and what will not. You can consciously combine genres (i.e. fusion).

Once you've started learning harmony, you literally 'take off' musically. You have so many directions you can go that you'll never get bored. There's always something new to discover once you get 'out of the box'.

But the problem is which direction to take, what to learn first and what to leave for later on. When people are looking for online jazz guitar lessons; are they just looking for information, or how to put the information to good use?

If it were just a matter of information, the web is filled with hundreds of sources to find out what the Lydian Mode is, for example. Wikipedia itself has the definition and an explanation for anyone interested in knowing about it. But how to put it into use effectively is an entirely different matter.

Good online Jazz guitar lessons are well structured in a step-by-step manner and this takes the guesswork out of your learning. You learn step-by-step through watching videos and seeing it written in musical notation and TAB, practice it and consolidate it by playing along with backing tracks so you get the right feel. By learning in this way, you can clearly see how much you've progressed; and being able to play exactly what you hear is one step closer every time.

Ruben Cardos has been a non stop studio and live musician as well as sound technician, electronics technician and sporadic guitar teacher for well over 25 years. I was lucky enough to procure a ticket for the second night of a performance by Boz Scaggs at the Las Vegas Hilton Theater, a longtime veteran of the musical world whose whose music, although very popular, is difficult to define. The closest definition to Mr. Scaggs unique voice is silky, smooth, utterly romantic. The last I had heard Mr. Scaggs, the circumstances were nowhere near the current gestalt of what his talent offers. Apparently after a concert at the House of Blues a few years back, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, there was a bit of a tirade after Boz could take no more heckling from the audience in insistent on hearing his big disco hit from the 70s "Lido Shuffle."

One can only imagine this jazz inspired talented singer and musician having to put up with the bad manners of those whose memories of prowling the disco floor was the only connection they had to his wonderful music. A few days later, he appeared at the Las Vegas House of Blues, apparently still seething from the previous concert in Atlantic City. As he and his band came out, and took up their instruments, without hesitation they played "Lido Shuffle" apparently to shut those people up who he anticipated would cause the same heckling at the previous concert. The audience however, was quite shocked at this, as the song is usually the last number played. He then began to play many of his current cuts that showed the sophistication of the cross-currents of jazz and the lifelong musical education that Mr. Scaggs gained from the roads of his life and the evolvement from the many years of performing. The audience, over the shock, then gave him the attention he deserved and he might have been a bit embarrassed by his over-reaction as he has always been a humble man, at least on stage.

This was not to be tonight, this was a night for celebration. The audience was primed and ready for the master of mellow to dig his heels in and as he always does builds, and builds, and builds his music to a fever pitch bringing the audience along on an emotional delightful ride that only Boz can deliver. He opened with "Lowdown" and then made his way to all his familiar hits stifling somewhat, the cries for "Lido Shuffle." Unfortunately as my prime seats eight rows back gave me a full view and put me right into the band's interplay, two younger girls directly behind me talked incessantly throughout the concert. It was obvious by their conversation that they were the band's "little groupies" and had seen the show numerous times. They knew every word, every line, every song but they were so young there would have been no way for them to have been alive during the years they were popular. As Boz was using younger musicians (himself approaching 70), I can only assume the cute little girls were given complementary seats assigned for the band to use. I just wish they would've shut up and even after numerous people hollered at them to do so they didn't.

One of the highlights of the evening was "Street Life" an old Crusaders song made popular in 1979, and it was brought to a extremely high-pitched level of excitement by the scatting of Ms. Monique, one of two very talented black backup vocalists, that filled every nuance and emotion of Mr. Scagg's classic repertoire. His new young guitarist had it all down carefully reproducing every timbre of the past superlatively for each song. He took over many of the solos Boz himself would have played in the past and his execution was right on the money, as Boz looked over in a fatherly way smiling at him for each well-played solo. Of course, the highlight of the evening was "Love, Look What You've Done To Me." There's not much to say about this song other than it's one of the most soulful, personal renditions of a man's complete surrender in falling in love again. Shortly after the song ended, a young woman from the center of the crowd yelled "I love you Boz" as the many women in the audience buzzed about with the same emotion. Boz Scaggs is an American institution, one that won't be around forever as we are all getting older and ultimately become more irrelevant to the generations of today.

And then of course the ultimate dance song for those who have spent their money just to hear Lido Shuffle began and a rush to the stage ensued. As a matter of fact, the first girl down there I was sure was the same girl who rushed the stage at the last Boz Scagg's concert two years ago at the House of Blues and probably was. Suffice it to say that now everyone was loose, screaming, rocking and rolling, and having a jolly good time as it seemed Boz was as well, a good sign, one that seemed to me that he had made peace with his past and wasn't going to let the popularity of his own making, interfere with the audience's enjoyment of his art. After the song, they waved to the crowd and walked off the stage surprisingly, as the show had not even come in at 70 minutes. After a rousing from the crowd they returned on que and went into the classic "Somebody Loan Me A Dime" (I've got to call my same old used-to-be) and again Ms. Monique stole the show capturing the full essence of the blues and the pain that the title implies. The dynamics of this very simple blues song are the key that make it emotionally charged. Beginning with a basic blues riff the song ends up eventually with the guitar player flailing double time at the highest range of chords he can play on his guitar and the rest of the band leaving it all on the field. The crowd responded with a roar as Boz went into "Breakdown Straight Ahead," and got everybody dancing.

This sweet sounding balladeer and rock 'n roll artist has written some of the most romantic lyrics and combined them with a perfect timbre and chords to create songs that will last lifetimes. His art is of a high order his keys and changes far from typical, brand him with the unique silky smooth sound that will endure for the generations. As he took his bows, he thanked the audience for allowing him to be there on the stage for them. Yes, he was now at peace with his craft and his attitude was all positive and humble. It is hard for a great artist to be content with what they have done. The drive that makes them great, makes them want to do new and different things. He has done more than enough for a lifetime. I hope his songs will never end. Boz, look what you've done to me.

Belly Dancing is a fun and unique pastime. It offers an excellent low-impact workout, a form of artistic expression, the opportunity to make friends and become part of a community of women, and a boost to your self-esteem. Whatever your reasons for seeking Belly Dancing lessons, you will want to consider a number of factors when looking for a local class.

Belly Dancing Styles

Belly Dancing encompasses a number of styles and if you are in an area with many classes you may have the choice of the style you learn. Elements of these styles will be the same but there can also be significant differences from the movements to costumes and music.

Take some time to learn about the different styles of Belly Dance, as one will most likely capture your imagination more than another. For example, you may be drawn to the earthy, traditional Baladi, or prefer the grace of modern Raqs Sharqi. You may fall in love with the floorwork and more revealing costumes of Turkish Cabaret or the opportunity for individual expression in American Tribal Style (ATS).

How to Find a Local Class

Local instructors will advertise their classes in one or more ways. Check the advertising boards of your local leisure and community centers, look for adult education brochures, search on Google and Craigslist, and ask friends or acquaintances if they know of anywhere you can learn. Remember to look for more than just belly dancing: classes may be listed as Middle Eastern Dance, Egyptian Dance, Turkish Dance, American Tribal (ATS), American Fusion, Oriental Dance or Raqs Sharqi.

If you have a local Turkish or Arabic restaurant they will probably have a belly dancer performing on certain nights of the week. Ask if the dancer gives lessons or knows of a good instructor in the area. Belly Dancers and troupes often perform at Rennaissance faires, cultural events and local festivals - perhaps that's where you saw dancers that made you want to take classes - so again ask if any of them teach or can recommend an instructor.

If No Teacher is Available in Your Area

Unfortunately, even with Belly Dancing growing in popularity around the world, there are still areas where classes are not available. While there is no substitute for a lesson with a teacher who can correct you when you make mistakes, or for the community of learning with other women, if you are unable to find a class there are many good instructional dvds available, and even free belly dancing lessons available online at various video sites such as YouTube and Expert Village.

How to Choose a Teacher

If you are lucky enough to be in an area where there are many Belly Dancing classes, how do you decide where to learn?

Initially, it may be a practical choice. What are the class times and locations. Which is most convenient for you to attend?

Find out more about the different styles of Belly Dancing and decide which you would most like to try. You might be drawn by the history, the moves and/or the costumes. If one style stands out for you, then go to that class.

Ask for recommendations from friends or acquaintances, or speak to current students. Ask about the content of the classes and the teacher.

Take a trial class. Most teachers will allow you to take a trial class to see whether you enjoy it or not. Even if they charge by the term, few will object to you taking one class before you pay the fees for the whole ten weeks. Some may even offer taster classes to help you make the decision before committing.

The most important elements of attending Belly Dancing lessons are that you feel comfortable and enjoy yourself. If you are not happy with a class then it may be time to move to a different instructor. Once you find a class you feel relaxed in there will be no stopping you. Enjoy!

As soon as you start your Belly Dancing lessons you will be addicted and will probably choose to take even more belly dancing classes as well as workshops. You will also want to know more about Belly Dancing styles, history, costumes and more...

Latin Thug - 4 Life Ash - T-Shirt

From the moment a child is born, the child looks up to the mother for all the wants. The umbilical chord is cut once the child is out of the worm world outside the womb, but it is the beginning of the tough world outside. The only person who can teach a child to deal with life is the mother. She is the one who is responsible for the values, personality, morals, strengths, weaknesses, emotional development, mental development, et al of the child.

It is so wonderful how an infant is able to distinguish between mother and other woman the child comes across. If one observes a child, he knows when his mother is coming to his cradle just by her sound or even scent.

Motherhood in the first year is not just feeding the child when the child is hungry, or cleaning the child when the child has messed up. It is much more. It is being there. It is training the child for the later stages of life. The child begins to learn from conception. And for this reason mothers are encouraged to expose their babies to educational children's songs from the time they are born.

According to various studies being conducted, a child's conception is the beginning of the learning stage. In fact a pregnant mother is recommended to do a lot of reading, eat healthy food and listen to happy music during the nine months. It may sound unbelievable, but a lot of habits of the mother are inculcated in the child at this point.

Music is an important aspect of the learning process in life. It has been seen that children learn basic concepts better when set to tunes that they can dance to, sing along with and clap for. Their way of learning is the joyful way of learning. This is the reason why one of the highest sales in music has been the genre of children's music. This maybe the nursery rhymes, specially created songs, story narrations, etc. Various studies have proved that children learn faster when taught in a happy and musical environment. Whereas children taught the same concepts in a dull environment lose interest in wanting to learn what is being taught to them.

What My Horse Taught Me About My Business

I've been around horses for the better part of 25 years. I've had my share of mishaps, and every one of them was my fault. I've never had a horse intentionally hurt me, throw me, bite me, or try to fool me. Horses just don't lie. It's one of my favorite things about them. They are as honest and authentic as we could ever hope to be. They are the epitome of "what you see is what you get". In short, horses are just horses and they never pretend (or attempt) to be anything else.

Horses are very intuitive animals. They rely on their instincts/intuition to keep themselves safe. They have an uncanny ability to identify emotions, even when you're doing your best to hide them. I can't tell you the number of times I was in a bad mood and tried to get near my horse, only to have him walk away from me every time I got close. I'd put on my happy face and use my happy voice but it didn't matter. That horse would avoid me like the plague UNTIL I just allowed myself to feel whatever I was feeling. The moment I'd stop trying to mask an emotion, he'd come right up to me and give me his usual nuzzle, as if to say, "See? That's all you had to do. Just BE how you feel. It's really okay with me." I swear, it's the craziest thing, but my horse always knows when I'm faking it.

Now, there are a couple of things about the care and handling of horses that are always under dispute. But, in my experience I've found that the best way to get a horse to do what you want is to ASK. The whole idea that you can beat a horse into submission is about as barbaric (to me) as taking a branding iron to a child who is misbehaving. You wouldn't do that would you? So why in the world would you try to force such an intelligent, intuitive creature into submission? Here's the thing: horses want to make you happy. It's true, I swear it. But there is an agreement that must be honored. That agreement is we get to ride on their backs and use their power to facilitate our needs and we must honor them for what they are. That includes listening to them and caring for them and showing some respect. It's got to be a mutual thing or it just won't work.

One last thing before we get to the little 'summary'. Horses and people don't view time in the same way. What I mean is, let's say you are trying to teach the horse to load into a trailer. The horse isn't having it. You have to be somewhere in 30 minutes and the horse won't budge. So you might try all sorts of ugly things to get that horse to load. And the horse is still not having it. There is really only one solution. You are the one who's trying to beat the clock, so you need to rearrange your schedule. Because as sure as the sun rises in the Eastern sky, that horse isn't going to load until it's good and ready. The time issue is YOUR problem, not his. And he couldn't care less about your appointment. So, don't force the issue. It'll turn into an ongoing nightmare every single time you try to load that horse into a trailer. The best way to get a horse to do something is to make it so he WANTS to do it. (But that's for another day). In short, don't expect that your definition of 'timely' is the same as your horse's. It isn't.

How does all this apply to my business? Well, it's pretty simple really. To recap:

1. Be who you are. Don't pretend to be anyone else. While you may not please all the people all the time, authenticity goes a long, long way in terms of the Big Picture. People, like animals, know when you're being real. So, be real.

2. Don't fake it. Feel what you feel and let yourself go through those emotions. This does NOT mean that you can treat people badly. What it does mean is that if you paste a smile on your face that you're not feeling, it's as easy to spot as plastic vampire teeth on Halloween. Never underestimate another person's intuition.

3. Always ask for the sale/business/etc. Don't think that just because you're in front of someone they're going to know what you want. Treat them with respect. Respect their ability to make choices. Honor their perspectives. Listen to what they're saying. It's all about communication.

4. Throw away your expectations of timeliness when dealing with your customers. Your definition of "soon" and theirs may be totally inharmonious. You can certainly ask for a commitment, but you must respect their time line too. Make it clear if you're on a deadline so they can take advantage of whatever it is you're offering. But always remember that we all 'dance to a different beat' and that beat may be completely different than yours. Think Waltz versus Rumba!

One more thing: next time you think it's everyone else who's messing up and ruining your day (business or otherwise) take a moment to look in the mirror. I'd be willing to bet that 9 times out of 10, it's the reflection you'll see that's causing the discord. Take responsibility for your life, your business and your future. Once you've done that, the rest is easy to figure out.

To your success~~~in all areas of your life!

Into the Light World Tour

Captured during a two-night stand at a Dutch arena, this 100-minute concert special documents Gloria Estefan's lavish 1991 world tour, which underscored the Cuban-American singer's graduation from acclaim as a dance-floor diva to the ranks of female pop superstars. At its best, Into the Light World Tour displays the relentless energy, personal warmth, and crack musicianship that Estefan and her husband, producer, and principal collaborator, Emilio Estefan Jr., had evolved through her old band, the Miami Sound Machine, and taken uptown through her solo career. When the star and her band kick into high gear, percussion simmering and horns blazing in taut, deftly arranged choruses, the propulsive lure of salsa is hard to resist.

Technically, Estefan is a singer with a supple tone but modest range, hardly suggesting the caliber expected of a bona fide diva. Neither does her small, compact frame suggest a dancer's physique, despite the production's reliance on extended dance sequences. Yet she makes the most with what she has, harnessing formidable physical energy and transmitting considerable warmth to her audience. Her material, including both Miami Sound Machine hits and subsequent solo signatures, works best when staying closest to her roots, riding the giddy syncopations of uptempo Latin rhythms, or plying the lambent emotions of traditional ballads. Her exhortations to dance--"Get on Your Feet," "Conga," and "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You" being the inevitable faves--work handily with an ecstatic audience.

More grizzled viewers should be forewarned that this, like most recent concert films, isn't purely documentary--apart from backstage sequences that duly flatter the star, the live sound has been liberally sweetened during post-concert production. --Sam Sutherland
Customer Review: A great concert
I never actually saw this video. I was at the concert. The concert was awesome, so if this video does a decent job of capturing it, then it should be great too.
Customer Review: Gloria is the best and so are her concerts
Gloria is the best singer ever. On stage she's a divette. She's the best and so are her shows. The way she sings live is great, and so is her dancing. The band is great too. They know how to play and everybody goes wild in the audience!!!!!!!Always!!!!! I love her with all my heart and soul, 4 ever.....

Customer Review: My boys love this book.
This is a wonderful book of popular songs in Spanish, which my triplet boys latched onto immediately. The songs are very engaging, and each page has lovely artwork. I speak Spanish, and my boys were born in Spain. I have been trying very hard to help them maintain a little Spanish, and this book has been very helpful. It doesn't come with a CD, but you can easily learn the tunes of the songs if you know how to read music. And even if you only speak rudimentary Spanish, I think it's possible to learn the songs and enjoy them. This book quickly became the boys' favorite bedtime routine. I hear them singing the songs during the day as well. I highly recommend it.
Customer Review: Great book
I love the colorful pictures in this book and that it has music to all of the songs. It is a wonderful book and my baby loves when I sing to him!

There are bedroom guitar players and there are live performers. There doesn't seem to be anything in between. The minute you walk on to a stage (whether you get paid or not) you are a professional. You are in the business of entertaining and displaying your wares, so to speak. And if you really want to seriously get your guitar playing together it is the latter you need to strive for in my opinion. I am not suggesting you 'turn pro', you know attempt to do this thing full time, that is a whole other set of issues itself, but in order for your guitar playing to really get to where it needs to get to, you simply have to play in a live performance setting, preferably in a public forum. Ideally with other musicians you can interact with.

You can spend a lifetime reading books, studying your musical heroes, playing along to music minus one records, but none of this will ultimately give you the full picture. In order to be a true well rounded musician, you have to have real world experience. I'll try to explain why...

When I was just starting out in the profession as a fresh untainted fish in the vast sea of the London music business, I had to get myself known in order to find work. So I set about to answer ads in music papers. Now, after studying classical guitar at the London College of Music, I came out of a 3 year course with a facility to sight-read. Or should I say the beginnings of sight-reading ability, as jazz and pop music written on paper is a whole other world, as I was about to find out. I remember having to sight-read a piece of jazz music with a dance band at an audition. There were about 10 guitar players going for this gig. I must have been about 23 years old. The musical director said "I kind of like what you did Chris but you didn't really cut it mate! There are other guys here that have what I need". Ouch!!! That hurt. But I was young. It was actually good to hear. So I went back to my music library, pulled out a ton of violin music and practiced reading in different positions on the fretboard. Not to mention learning how to grab chords on sight in different fret positions.

Another time, I went down to audition for the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, a band known to be extremely taxing musically, and a training ground for London session players. I sat in the guitar chair with my Gibson 335 on my lap, ready to play. The director called a chart, I placed it on the stand and he counted it off. He counted it off around 250 BPM. Frighteningly fast! Well, it was all I could do to get my eyes to follow the music, measure by measure, much less play the music that was written within those bars! I didn't even touch my guitar that rehearsal. I simply placed it back in its case and went home. Ouch again! That was a hard knock! I gave myself exactly a year to get it together. I went back to my practicing with a vengeance. A year later I joined the band for about a year and a half.

Another for instance; about 13 years ago I was playing with a jazz singer in a trio situation with an eminent LA drummer and acoustic bassist. I hadn't done much trio playing, if any at the time, but I was looking forward to playing. At the end of one of the songs I completely messed up the ending. In fact I would go further, I hadn't really worked on any song endings. Didn't really have that together at all. The drummer scowled at me, particularly because I threw him off, as I was not definite in how I wanted to end the song (because I didn't know myself!). He was furious when I made him look bad. He said to me "Dude, you've got to dictate these endings, you're the one playing the chords!". He was right. I was crushed! I went home, sulked for a week (maybe two). Then I went back to my practice room. I was not to be defeated.....

These are the hard knocks you simply have to get in your music life to dictate what you need to work on to get your total musicianship together! You just cannot expect to perfect your instrument without real world experience. You can't get that experience any other way. I can recount tons of times that this sort of thing has happened, and there are still things today that I learn on a weekly basis at live gigs, telling me what I need to work on. The difference today of course is that it's me who is being critical of myself, rather than other bandmates and musical directors telling me I suck!

And the neccessity of performing live is true of any musical genre you choose. Interacting with other musicians is an art in itself. I know technically great players who can't play with others. Does this make them great musicians? I'm not so sure. But they sure can get round the instrument. But if they were to do any amount of live ensemble playing they would have one or two knocks coming, and if they are smart they would work on those issues. Otherwise it's back to solo guitar playing in the back of their local restaurant. (A noble and valid thing to do, let me also say).

There are many issues that come up in a real live playing situation that just don't come up in a bedroom practice session. Time, time-feel, supportive ensemble playing, projection of sound and tone, and most of all a sense of energy and commitment within a performance that is extremely different, and is very difficult to even put into words frankly. You just need to experience it, and that experience will improve your playing tenfold.

So get out there and do some gigs. I know it is hard to make that happen sometimes, but if you cannot make it happen then start a rehearsal band with a few others and play through repertoire. Get together with other guitarists and play through tunes, take solos and take turns being supportive. As you improve, take the plunge and take yourself to the next level.

And by recommending you do all this I am by no means suggesting you put away your books, records and Jamie Abersold play alongs. Absolutely not. This is something of course you should continue to do. But it is only 50% of your musical makeup. I promise you, by performing live you will improve yourself as a guitar player, but most of all as a musician, and at the end of the day this is what we all need to aspire to.

Go to it and have fun!
