Fender Electric Guitars - As Played By Stevie Ray Vaughan
Stevie Ray Vaughan hailed from Dallas Texas, and his name is synonymous with fender electric guitars. Stevie predominantly played a late fifties or early sixties version of the Strat (opinion is divided on its exact date), but there is no doubting that it was a Fender Stratocaster (Strat) guitar. Stevie seemed to favour this guitar over most others, and the sound is distinctly Fender, and Strat in particular, in quality.
The sound produced by Stevie Ray is almost classic Fender. The Strat is very distinctive, and adds a beautiful tone, especially to Stevie Ray's blues playing. There is a lot of recorded music by Stevie Ray, and all of it is great to hear. I certainly recommend that you seek some out and enjoy the Texas blues at its very best.
Stevie's background was steeped in the blues, so it is no surprise that his recordings feature many blues cuts. The video of Stevies' performance of Texas Flood is a great example of his feel for the blues. Stevie didn't stop with the blues though, and he used his Fender Guitar to great effect on many of his own compositions, as well as blues classics. He played a kind of shuffle exquisitely, as demonstrated on brilliant tunes such as 'Pride and Joy' and 'Cold Shot'. SRV also covered many rock classics, and could do anything song he turned his attention to justice.
I had the great privilege of seeing Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble at the Hammersmith Odeon (it's now called something else I think) in London, in the late 1980's. Apart from the pleasure of seeing SRV play, the event was doubly memorable for me because Eric Clapton came in, accompanied by Ringo Starr and other halves, and sat down in front of me! How cool was that.
Stevie wrapped his Fender around all his classic cuts, including some specialty rocks songs that he covered, in honour of his peers. I am thinking here of Jimi Hendrix, for whom SRV covered Little Wing and Voodoo Chile. And Stevie's renditions of these songs were spectacular. However, remembering Eric Clapton, reminded me of another SRV cover, which I recall EC getting very animated about, And that was a version of Stevie Wonder's classic song 'Superstition', played with all the panache you would expect from a super showman like Stevie Ray Vaughan. And if Eric Clapton loved it, who am I to argue?
I am very grateful to the likes of Google's You Tube that allows us to see late great artists like Stevie Ray Vaughan plying their trade. Seeing these great performers, many on stage where they were in their element. is a chance to see great workmen use their tools of trade, which in Stevie Ray's case, was a Fender Electric Guitar!
Fender electric guitars rock! Stevie Ray Vaughan played them, so could you! Great music, great guitars, great time!

Bachata Is Not Grinding
The next dance craze is bachata, a Dominican dance. Many people have been dancing it incorrectly. Since it's a very close romantic dance, most people dance it in a grinding way. It's not! You can grind during merengue, house, hip-hop and even lambada, but please don't grind during bachata!
There is big difference between gyrating and grinding. Bachata is NOT grinding! I have been trying to figure out why some women avoid dancing bachata. They think it's a freak dance. They think it's perversive. Being a bachata teacher that I am, I take offense with this notion. Any bachata teacher that teaches such false gospel should stick to house and hip-hop.
Grinding involves pelvises. And sometimes crotches. Also, back ends. Take two persons; add hormones, romantica music and lots of friction and you get the point. This dance is called "Freak Dancing," not bachata!
Yes, If you have taken my classes and workshops, I have always emphasized leading from the hips, and that, you must do when you are both close to each other. If you are a good leader, your hips along with your partner's, naturally and automatically, move in unison. If you are grinding, you are doing it wrong!
Bachata is not frottage!
On the other hand, I love the gyration of the hips because this type of movement is accepted since the beginning of dancing. It is one good expression of dancing. Some dancers perform it while dancing solo (merengue or salsa shines), or they gyrate with their partners in unison!
Now If I ever see you in the clubs again grinding to bachata, I'll slap you upside the head!

Dance Shows Are Not New to Television
Despite what many people think, dancing on television is not new at all. The history of dance shows on networks is surprising to many, but dance programming has been around since the beginning of television. There is no doubt the recent network dance shows have brought back the desire to dance. After all, dance is, indeed, all the rage these days. Check almost any television network and you will find a dance show. With so many shows hitting the major networks, there is a renewed interest in dance, especially among teens. Many teens both experienced and not, are watching the shows for the latest moves and the latest dance fashion.
Dance programs are becoming a hit more and more everyday, and the audience is growing hot for it everyday. Such shows as Dancing with the Stars are taking dance enthusiast by storm. Turning on and dancing in step with their favorite program is what millions of viewers are doing each night. So much, that there has been four new dance programs slated for upcoming shows. Why is dance television engaging both and young? Mostly, people watch to see what the latest moves are, while others are watching to see what the latest fashion their favorite dancer is wearing. Some teens are watching the shows and running out to their favorite dance studio and asking to be taught similar moves and the fashionist are running out to a dancewear boutique and buying similar dancewear.
But, dance themed shows are nothing new. They've been around for quite some time. Such shows as The Arthur Murray Show aired in the 50's and were hosted by the famous Arthur and Kathryn Murray themselves. Yes, the same people who have chains of Murray Dance Studios you see across the United States. The 1960 brought great shows such as the Groovy Show and Hollywood A Go Go. But it was Soul Train, which aired in 1970, which brought tight dance grooves into the American home. People, both black and white would tune in not only for the music, but to catch a glimpse of new and innovative dance grooves. Soul Train was pivotal in launching the resurgence of people's interest in dancing and dance fashion. It was a way the TV audience to dial into current dance and trends in fashion. The 80's and 90's brought about shows such as Club MTV, VH1 Dance Machine, and the influential Dance Party USA on the USA network. The shows were very popular among the Generation X crowd leading the way for the current offering on networks now.
There will always be dance shows on television. Dance and the music that drives it, changes with each newer generation adding new spice and flavor to what is possible on the dance floor or in the studio, even if you are luck, on a prime time slot. And as with previous generations there is a rabid following of their favorite dance show. Current dance shows are no different and it explains why the networks are jumping over each other to get to the next best dance show.
Dance Auditions and Dance Intensive
90's dance musicA New Twist on Old Waltz
The term Ballroom Dancing is the most general and the oldest term that is used to describe formal dances and generally includes Waltz, Tango, Slow Foxtrot, Quickstep and Viennese Waltz dances as well as some of the Latin dances. There two types of waltz in this group, the Classic Waltz and the Viennese Waltz.
The Classic Waltz is known as the mother of dances as it was the first dance where people actually danced in front of each other. This made it a very exciting dance when it was first introduced. It is based on an 18th century Austrian folk-dance and the steps are based on a box step with a rotary motion. The Classic Waltz, or the 'slow' or 'English' Waltz as it is sometimes called, is known for a gliding motion with a slight rise and fall and is normally danced to a slow tempo which requires a large degree of control to dance well.
The Viennese Waltz on the other hand is elegant and beautiful to watch. It is sometimes seen in movies and even Disney cartoons! As the name suggests it is linked to Vienna where the Aristocracy danced the Viennese Waltz to music by Strauss and other classical composers. The Viennese Waltz is a faster movement than the Classical Waltz, and is danced at about 180 beats (58-60 measures) a minute, as opposed to about 90 beats per minute with 3 beats to the bar for the Classical Waltz.
The Viennese Waltz is a rotary motion where the dancers are constantly turning either in a clockwise (natural) or anti-clockwise (reverse) direction. This is interspersed with non-rotating change steps to switch between the directions of rotation. Furthermore, in a properly danced Viennese Waltz, couples do not pass, but turn continuously left and right while they travel counterclockwise around the floor following each other in procession. Although this dance is still danced on social occasions, it is more usual for the Classical Waltz to be used.
In the Standard dances such as the waltzes, men traditionally wear formal coat-tails, vests or waistcoats, and bow ties. Women wear elegant and colorful gowns, often with sheer fabric draped from the shoulders or arms. Partners remain in closed position facing each other, throughout the dance, and movements tend to be elegant and sweeping.
American Smooth allows more open work where the partners can separate from each other and dance in open positions. American Smooth can be best described as a variation of ballroom dancing with an enhanced range of movements and exciting steps. All basic principles and the technique of ballroom dancing still apply, however partners are not required to maintain a continuous body contact. The removal of the body contact restriction allows the dancers to perform a variety of new steps such as: lady under arm turns, spins, side by side positions, parallel turns, dips, drops and other variations that would never be allowed in the traditional ballroom dancing.
The term 'Ballroom' has been used to describe Waltz, Tango, Slow Foxtrot, Quickstep and Viennese Waltz as a group of dances together with a range of Latin dances such as the Rumba, Quickstep and Cha-Cha-Cha. Ballroom dances may have at one time also included historical dances like Minuet, Quadrille, Polonaise, Pas de Gras, and Mazurka. However there was no standard definition and so as different dances were introduced new terms were introduced to differentiate these. "Modern Ballroom" (in short "Modern"), was introduced in Britain to referring to Old Time, Sequence or Latin-American dances.
But in Europe the term "Modern" was already frequently used to describe a totally different type of dancing (eg. jazz or other form of solo dancing), so the term Standard was introduced instead. But "Standard" had an unclear meaning in America, where there is an American version of it called American Smooth. Therefore American's introduced the term "International Standard" to make the difference clear.
In spite of its historical image as a pastime for the privileged; formal competitions, sometimes referred to as DanceSport, allow participation by less advanced dancers at various proficiency levels. In the United States, amateur dance proficiency levels are defined by USA Dance (formerly United States Amateur Ballroom Dance Association,) The International Olympic Committee now recognizes competitive ballroom dance. It is doubtful that it will be included as an official sport in the Olympic Games especially in light of efforts to reduce the number of offerings, but the application has not been permanently rejected.
Of all of the dances, the Waltz is the perfect one to learn first. It can be learnt in a few minutes and yet can take a lifetime to master.

latin cdsDownload Hip Hop Songs - Risks and Prevention When Downloading Hip Hop Songs Off the Internet
Looking to download hip hop songs? You are certainly not alone out there. In the era of hip hop culture, it is only natural to see millions of people surfing the Net in a search for quality yet affordable hip hop music.
Basically, everything you may need for your music collection, including all the latest hits, is available on the Web and it only matters at what cost. Theoretically, you can download hip hop songs from nearly any music download website as this highly popular style is included in most music databases.
However, you should be aware of certain risks involved in the process of downloading off the Internet and know how to avoid them.
Risk 1 - Incompatibility and poor quality of music files
When going to download hip hop songs, you first need to make sure the music files the site provides are in a format that is compatible with your music player. The aspect of quality is harder to check, because not all sites allow a trial period or sample downloads. If you are familiar with music format characteristics and bit rates, it would be easier for you to get an idea of the quality; otherwise, you may find yourself in a situation, when you have to take a blind decision. Check what guarantees the site has as well as its overall reputation among the users.
Risk 2 - Copyright law infringement.
Often, unknowingly, you may download hip hop songs that are copyright protected. Technically, this means you commit a crime and can be punished for that. To avoid a lawsuit against you, steer clear of controversial peer-to-peer sites, known for a lot of illegal activities going on them. Check carefully what legality proofs the site can show.
Risk 3 - Adware and spyware in your computer.
File-sharing networks as well as some other free music sites make money by installing harmful adware and spyware on your PC in order to monitor your browsing habits. These applications considerably slow down your computer's performance and can even modify your system settings. Besides, it is like being watched all the time. Your privacy should not be traded for a few free downloads. If you just cannot avoid free sites, at least invest in a powerful anti adware and spyware program.
Risk 4 - Virus attacks.
Widespread on P2P sites, where you download files directly from another user's computer, virus attacks can easily destroy your computer and even affect your music player, like iPod or Zune, for instance. In case you are a regular user of such sites, advanced and constantly updated anti-virus software is vital for you.
Risk 5 - Mislabeled and corrupt files.
You think you are going to download a hip hop song of your choice, but what comes instead is a pornography material or something that might be insulting and inappropriate in a number of ways. These are not uncommon on file sharing networks as they bear no responsibility of what is being shared among their users. Corrupt and wrong files are even more common. Waste of time for adult users, such cases are alarming when a teen is faced with them. Little can be done here, except for avoiding P2P sites and talking to your kid about all the dangers of using these networks.
There are plenty of reliable, secure and rich online resources to download hip hop songs from - find all the necessary information and links on my entertainment blog.

90's dance music3 Tips To Help You Improve Your Vocal Stamina
Angela loves to sing, even though she doesn't have the voice talent that most people believe they should have in order to be a good singer.
With that kind of determination, she took some singing lessons to improve her vocal stamina. In time, she was able to develop her singing prowess and was able to build a career of her own.
Many people seem to believe that it is not possible to gain talent through singing and that all the talented singers in the world were born with it. The good news is that anyone can become a good singer as long as they put in the time and effort to do so. All anyone has to do is learn the right techniques in order to improve their vocal stamina.
Even famous singers take on lessons to improve their vocal stamina. They need to do this from time to time to strengthen their vocal cords and increase their range as much as four points on average.
Talent is not everything when it comes to singing. Singing also is based on physical exertion. When you sing, the air is forced out from the diaphragm and the vocal cords are what determine the pitch of the voice.
You should remember that a powerful voice requires the physical exertion that is calls for. This is achieved through steps that help you improve your vocal stamina.
Here are a few steps to help get you on your way to building more vocal stamina and to become the singer that you have always wanted to be:
1. At first you must perform the correct warm ups. Just like you would do if you were exercising it is important that you first start with warming up before you rehearse. Doing this will help your vocal cords stabilize its potential for reaching the higher notes that you desire.
Some warm up exercises may include things like humming, cord adducting or singing on pitch. After this doing these warm ups your voice should be ready for more "far-reaching" vocalizing.
2. Next you need to develop a good technique. If you have not noticed, every great singer has their own way of delivering a pitch. It is essential to develop one of your own in order to guarantee good singing performance.
3. Last you need to improve the control you have over your Larynx. Doing this will help you improve the tone you have when you are singing. You will be able to manage the location of the Larynx while you are delivering your notes.
All of these thing mainly focus on the physical exertion put out by the vocal cords. It is essential to improve your vocal stamina and be able to sing that note at a higher level.

latin cdsBallroom Dancing - A Brief History
When you think of Ballroom dancing, you generally think of flowing gowns and dark tuxedos. You also think of beautiful, willowy, women and tall, dark, handsome men waltzing their way around the dance floor. However, ballroom dance is not just the Waltz, it is a lot more. From the elegant and stately waltz, a hot, sultry and sexy Tango or Paso Doble, or a good bit of lively fun like the Fox Trot, Jive or Quick Step, ballroom dancing is all of these.
Technically, ballroom dancing is defined as "Any of various, usually social dances in which couples perform set moves". However, the word "ball" (not the child's toy) comes from the Latin "ballare" meaning to dance and forms the base for the word ballroom (a room for dancing), ballet (a dance), and ballerina (a dancer).
Ballroom dancing was very popular among the gentry (or upper class) of England, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and didn't really catch on with the working class until the late 19th and early 20th century.
It wasn't until the early 1920's that competitive ballroom dancing began gaining popularity. As a result, the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (formerly known as The Imperial Society of Dance Teachers) formed a Ballroom Branch whose function was to standardize the ballroom dances.
Today, modern ballroom dancing revolves around five dances comprising: the Modern Waltz; the Viennese Waltz; the Slow Foxtrot; Tango; and the Quickstep.
Latin American ballroom is short for Latin and American - not a reference to Latin countries and its dances are the Samba; Rumba; Paso Doble; Cha-Cha; and the Jive.
The modern ballroom dances all involve a couple dancing in a closed hold and vary in tempo (beats per minute) and rhythm (structure). A closed hold involves 5 bodily points of contact between the couple. Three of these points involve the hands, the males left hand holding the females right, the females left hand on top of the males right upper arm (for the Tango the females hand would go behind his arm) and the males right hand on the females back resting on her left shoulder blade. The other two points of contact are the females left elbow resting on the males right elbow and the right side of the females chest touching the right side of the males chest. This dance posture provides a very elegant look as the couple floats across the dance floor and has its origins in the European royal courts.
There is some conjecture that the right side-to-right side contact of the closed hold may have originated from a time when men danced while wearing their swords, which were hung on their left sides. Additionally, this theory would also explain the counter clockwise movement around the dance floor as the man would've stood on the inside of the circle so he wouldn't inadvertently hit any of the people watching the dancers with his sword as he danced past.
The dancing posture for Latin American ballroom varies from dance to dance with some dances using the closed hold and others where the partners hold each other with only one hand.
Both Modern Ballroom and Latin American Ballroom has been standardized for teaching purposes and has a set, internationally recognized vocabulary, technique, rhythm and tempo.

irish dance musicThree Great Opportunities To Shower Your Baby In Love
Books and advice on childbirth and childraising are thick on the ground. One whisper of impending pregnancy and the parents-to-be are bombarded with well-meaning words from friends, relatives, complete strangers and expert authors.
Now, its my turn to share three simple opportunities to welcome a baby into your family and shower it with love. Whether you are an experienced parent or new to the job, what I learnt with my three children will not only help your child to develop their abilities and senses, but will help the parent get to know their new baby and deepen the love they already have.
Sing to your baby at every opportunity
It doesn't matter whether you have a good singing voice or not, your baby will love it. Make up nonsense words or turn your activity into a song. This is especially good at changing, bathing and feeding times. Cheer baby up with a happy song and changing/bathing becomes much more enjoyable. Anxieties at being naked and freezing lessen as they learn this wonderful new game that is not only interesting, but gets them the undivided attention of the parent. Touch as you sing about gorgeous little toes and strong arms, silken hair and pudgy tummies. Babies are listening, feeling and learning. Who else in this world will ever pay you so much attention? In another few years, the baby certainly won't, so make the most of it while you can.
Sing a gentle song at feed times to help baby relax. Rock them as you feed and don't be scared to stand up and rock from side to side or slowly waltz around the room. This is relaxing for you both. Lullabies at night time help to send them off to sleep, and the babies will have their favourites so be prepared to learn a few and experiment with modulation and tempo. My eldest child preferred Silent Night. My younger two liked Rock-a-bye Baby sung very slow. This lullaby worked on my middle child until she was three!
Talk to your baby at every opportunity
Remember that baby is used to hearing your voice insitu. Chatting, reading, general conversation and questions invite the baby to respond, even if its only by smiling and making eye contact. Conversation also helps include the baby into the dynamics of family life. Teach your baby valuable skills right from the start simply by including them. This helps both parent and child. The child learns how to handle attention through growing confidence and esteem [established within the safety of the family]. The parent learns to understand how their child thinks and assimilates knowledge. In these early days, be aware of what you're teaching the child - strong values such as kindness and compassion, generosity and inclusion, and be sure to demonstrate them through actions as well.
Dance with your baby at every opportunity
Always my children's favourite part of the day. Turn the stereo on, crank up the volume and swing around the room! My children grew up with an appreciation of various types of music, especially jazz and swing because its fun to listen to when mum is also whirling you around the room. Not only is the parent getting some exercise, the baby is learning rhythm, harmony, coordination, and a sense of space. They are used to lots of movement so keep it up. I've watched young children, from the barely walking to seven or so years of age dance spontaneously to jazz music. Something in the mix is almost irresistible to their innate sense of rhythm and dance.
Nonsense dances to children's action songs like Knees Up Mother Brown will get the heart pumping and assist in coordination - the parents that is, and you'll have your babe giggling and chortling in no time! These type of songs are commonly available on CD, but if you're not sure ask at the local music shop or department store. Music for early childhood is big business!
I didn't pick these tips up from a book or hear them from a well-meaning friend, I discovered them with my first child. The first person ever who couldn't get enough of my singing and listened to every word that fell from my lips. Oh, those were the days! I carried the practise on and I now have three confident girls who love to sing and dance and talk my ear off. They are happy, well-rounded and know that if a great song comes on the radio I am happy to stop everything and sing or dance with them. None of us will ever be professional, but we sure have a lot of fun together.

Dance Meditation - 2 Easy, Energizing and Relaxing Techniques
Meditation is an ancient practice that focuses on breathing techniques and quieting the mind: observing what is happening at the present moment, enhancing relaxation and awareness. Dance meditation is easy, stress reducing, energizing, and an effective way to relax muscular tension. Both men and women find that dance meditation induces a relaxed and focused body and mind.
You need only walk and sway with music to enjoy the benefits of dance meditation. It is not necessary to be a skilled dancer to have a fulfilling meditation experience. Dance meditation is not about dance technique; instead, it is a movement meditation where it is fine to dance in any way that feels good to you.
Almost any activity can become a meditation by quieting the mind's internal chatter and allowing relaxation to take place. Any of these popular meditation techniques may be combined with dance meditation:
* Visualizing images from nature such as a beach scene or the night sky;
* Focusing on where muscles are tense and then relaxing them one by one;
* Observing the rhythm of your breathing, flowing in and out;
* Focusing on an external object, such as a candle or statue;
* Verbal meditations with a prayer, chant, or song;
* Walking meditations.
There are different forms of dance meditation, just as there are different forms of dance: belly dance and tribal dances evolved from ancient times and merge well with meditation. Belly dance and meditation are both ancient arts that have evolved into modern times. Some belly dance instructors teach movement meditation techniques for stress relief and relaxation, since belly dance and meditation merge so well.
There are differences between dance meditation and other meditations. The eyes remain open during moving meditations to avoid colliding with surrounding objects, whereas many other meditations are done with eyes closed. Instead of mudras (prescribed poses of the fingers, such as those used in yogic meditation) dance meditations use abstract gestures of the arms and hands.
What you need for a basic dance meditation:
* Relaxing music with a slow tempo.
* A relaxed, quiet and safe environment.
* Comfortable clothing you can move in - no restrictive waistbands or tight pants.
A basic belly dance meditation technique:
* Use a slow song from a belly dance CD to inspire dance movements.
* Begin in a standing position, arms relaxed at sides.
* Focus on the rhythm of your breathing, slowly flowing in and out.
* Let your arms lift up, down, or any way that feels comfortable; mirror the rhythm of the music, or the rhythm of your breaths.
* Sense your body relaxing; allow stress to float away with each exhalation, releasing outward.
* Sway, walk, or do simple dance steps, moving with the rhythm of your music.
* Continue this for a time, becoming more and more relaxed.
* Slowly wind down, ending your meditation by sitting quietly and observing the relaxed feeling you attained. The next time you meditate, it will be easier to get to this relaxed place, because you have already experienced it.
Veil meditation
Meditation with a veil is another popular form of belly dance meditation to try; it is simple to learn and quite relaxing. To do a veil meditation, play with a soft three yard length of fabric about 40 inches wide, allowing it to flow in the air as you move it around with your hands, reflecting the flow of the music and rhythmic energy.

top dance musicThe Rhythmic Tribal Belly Dance
Tribal belly dance recreates what might have been as far as different tribes and the interaction between them. There is no real evidence as to what really existed but it is understood that tribal belly dance has its roots in folkloric and traditional dance. It has really taken off within the last ten to twenty years.
Tribal Belly Dance is a Western style of Belly Dance derived/fused primarily from the dance/troupe style of Jamila Salimpour in the 70's. This style of dance fuses various folklore and contemporary dance movements, from various countries such as the Middle East. In addition it uses a mix of music, often preferring acoustic instruments, authentic tribal songs or tribal sounding songs. However, recently it has been incorporating a lot of the world trance and beat music.
This intriguing dance is characterized by an improvisational style, with dancers learning sets of steps and moves rather than choreographing entire dances. The dance is also very stress relieving and women often confess that belly dance class is the highlight of their week and that they feel so good when they leave class, not only physically, but mentally as well. Tribal belly dance is a powerful and fun way to express yourself, and share in something truly uplifting with other women.
Its roots are in folkloric and the traditional belly dance. That being said it is considered a recent innovation. It's really taken off within the last ten to twenty years because of the exciting nature of the dance. The visual display of several dancers all performing at once is very compelling and exciting to watch.
Performances are seldom choreographed but rather cued from a vocabulary of movement by a designated lead dancer. This encourages a spirit of team work, awareness and cooperation, all parts of being a "tribe". Performances of this style are quite energetic and exciting to watch. However, a side effect is that dancers who only study this style of dance could potentially be unable to dance without the lead of other tribal improvisational dancers.

top dance musicThe Word Game
What is it about words? What is it that makes them so fascinating, or so difficult? Way back when, when I was in school, I was a perfectionist. Of course, I still am, but back then one of the ways that those traits came out was in my writing. I have always loved to write. It was a point of pride to never use the same words to describe the same thing twice in anything that I wrote. One thing that I did that enhanced my ability to fulfill this quest was taking foreign languages. In high school, I took French, Spanish and Latin. It was so cool how learning these languages improved my English, especially Latin. I can remember my Latin teacher telling me that someday in the future, "agricola", or farmer, would probably be the only Latin word I would remember. Even then, Latin was a language that was "dying" in popularity. Of course they were close to right, although I do remember "amor" or love, as well. (That's the romantic in me, I suppose.)
The cool thing about learning new languages was the understanding they provided me in understanding English. Agricola, for example, is a root word for agriculture. Amor is a root word for amorous. When I was in school we had the choice of taking French or Spanish in 7th grade. I chose French because that was the language that my best friend at the time chose. I was always glad that I did, because after learning English and French, Spanish, and then Latin, were a breeze. How many times in your life have you heard someone talk about their "fianc" or about going to a "rendez-vous"? What about eating "tortillas" or "enchiladas"? Every language has added to ours in some way. Latin is the root language for all three of the others, as well as several other languages, including Italian.
Now, why would anyone care about my foreign language experience? Well, what it all comes down to is my vocabulary. While I, admittedly, have lost quite a bit over the years, the experiences that I have had have given me a basis to remember. When I speak, or when I write, it is natural for me to do my best to use words that are a perfect fit. I cannot relax when I am writing if I cannot think of exactly the word I need to make my meaning understood. Having a Thesaurus helps, of course, but what about when I am not at home, or in a situation where I have to have instantaneous recall? That is where having a large vocabulary can make a huge difference. It makes a difference in how employers look at me. It makes a difference in how others perceive my intelligence. It really comes in handy when helping my children in school.
All that is well and good, but what if you haven't had the opportunities that I have had to learn? What if you are a student, struggling in school? What if you are a parent and your kids are struggling, but you are unable to help them? What if you lost your job and are in the market for a new one? What if you are trying to climb the corporate ladder or just move up in your company? Or even, what if you are retired and just want to travel or volunteer, and you end up helping children with their schoolwork? Whatever place you are in in life, a substantial vocabulary will help you.
